Last year’s summer internship scheme recruited seven local interns who had been studying at universities across the country to work within seven key departments. Candidates were matched to roles based on their previous experience and degree and challenged them in their tasks and responsibilities to ensure they left the organisation feeling more prepared for the workplace. Here’s how they got on.
Many of our former interns have gone on to have strong careers after their time working here.
Phoebe has recently secured a 12-month marketing placement at the Walt Disney company, but she was once an intern in our Marketing and Communications Team. Having interned here in 2024, she attributes the TVCA with supporting her in developing transferable, workplace skills.
My internship at the TVCA was my first professional experience which helped in developing my leadership and collaborative skills. The marketing and communications department ensured I gained a variety of valuable skills during my time while also giving me the freedom to work on projects independently. Thanks to this opportunity, I have recently secured a 12-month marketing placement at the Walt Disney company!
Former Marketing & Communications intern Benjamin Fearnley now works as a Junior Content Producer Apprentice at Wander Films after interning with us in 2023.
The internship helped out massively with shaping my career as it allowed me to understand the potential and opportunities for filmmaking and multimedia within marketing environments, as well as the opportunities for these kind of jobs on our door step in Teesside.
The internship allowed me to establish a base knowledge of marketing and communication skills, which I now use daily in my job, and helped me to stand out to potential employers when applying for jobs after the internship.
Hope Simpson interned in our Creative Place team in 2021 alongside her Art History degree at St Andrews University. Proud of her local heritage, Hope worked with her department to ensure that residents in and outside of the region could also experience the history and culture of Tees Valley.
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship in the Creative Place team which combined my love of culture and the arts with current affairs in my local region. From supporting local festivals, composing an industrial heritage report, creating a guide to culture in the Tees Valley for young people, and attending meetings for the Local Creative Education Partnership, I was exposed to many different influential people (artists to museum managers), and many different intersecting industries. An eye-opening experience having just left school which gave me confidence in the sector I hope to work in. I must mention too the wonderfully friendly and supportive colleagues in the Creative Place team I worked alongside.
I undertook another internship in the Ministry of Justice, exploring the Civil Service, and have also worked in a theatre box office to gain further experience in the creative industries. After graduation I hope to start a career within the arts – whether that be in galleries, museums, auction houses, or like in the TVCA Creative Place team, a public organisation supporting the arts sector.
Michael Widdowson, once a Legal and Procurement intern in the TVCA’s 2021 summer internship programme, now studies for his doctorate at the University Institute in Florence.
I loved the internship at TVCA! Interns were offered a great work environment at TVCA thanks to lovely colleagues and supportive management. Interns were treated like individual members of the team and were not viewed merely as short-term underlings or tea runners.
Working in the legal department was diverse and interesting as work was divided up between the main office and the Teesworks site. The TVCA summer internship was vital in fostering a greater practical understanding of the application of laws to real-world projects. Going on a tour of the Teesworks site diversified my internship by stressing the practical real-world importance of the legal work I was doing and the laws I had previously studied at university. University studies alone do not provide this level of vital practical knowledge on the application of law to the real world.
Since my internship, I have pursued further studies, and I am currently doing a PhD at the European University Institute in Florence. The practical experience gained from the summer internship has given me vital knowledge in understanding the law outside of its core theoretical basis. This has given me unique practical knowledge of law enabling me to stand out in my PhD studies.
