I am Evie, the intern for the Net Zero department at the TVCA. I am currently, studying Physical Geography at the University of Leeds.
I chose to apply for the Net Zero internship because I wanted to gain valuable work experience relevant to my studies and interests. Tees Valley stood out as the ideal place to do this, being a leading region in the UK’s transition to net zero. Additionally, I was keen to understand how a regional authority functions in relation to net zero and how their plans for the area are developed and put into action.
During my time with the Net Zero department, my primary project involved creating a brochure, a set of PowerPoint slides and maps to highlight the key sectors within net zero: CCUS, Hydrogen, Sustainable Fuels, Clean Power, Net Zero Innovation, Chemicals and Circular Economy, and Advanced Manufacturing. I researched significant projects, companies and investments in the Tees Valley, with the main goal of providing both my team and the public with detailed, up-to-date information about each sector with a further goal looking to secure more business in the Tees Valley. The brochure includes case studies, maps, key figures and relevant data related to these industries which support the TVCA’s implementation of net zero strategies. This project has helped me to develop important research and critical thinking skills, essential for completing my degree and can be applied to my future career.
I also had the opportunity to attend networking events, meetings, and site tours, which were all extremely insightful. These experiences allowed me to see first-hand how this regional authority interacts with local businesses, communities and stakeholders in the Tees Valley. Such events were valuable in broadening my understanding of the net zero projects and assisted me in building connections within my department and the wider community.
During the internship, I became familiar with working in a professional office environment and learned how to conduct myself when engaging with people and businesses. This experience has enhanced my communication, teamwork, confidence and organisation skills which are essential for any future job roles. It has also provided me with practical knowledge and skills that complement my university studies.
I look forward to completing my degree over the next two years. This internship has given me important experience to help pursue a career in the net zero and sustainability field and has highlighted the growing opportunities within the Tees Valley. Additionally, the skills I developed throughout the internship will be highly advantageous when applying for jobs after university, having gained first-hand experience of the working world.
