Hi!, I am Matilda, the 2024 intern for TVCA’s Net Zero department and I am studying physical geography at Aberystwyth University.
I decided to apply to the intern scheme at the end of my penultimate year of university as I was eager to gain work experience that was both engaging and relevant to my interests and job prospects.
During my time with the Net Zero department, I completed multiple reports looking at national net zero initiatives, especially those with a focus on airport decarbonisation and offsetting schemes. Examining these reports helped me to acquire and develop research and critical thinking skills that will be useful to my future career.
I also attended various meetings and was even offered the opportunity to attend the Trees on Tees Community Forestry Plan Stakeholder Consultation. This event was incredibly interesting as it allowed me to meet companies with ties to Tees Valley, all with the joint goal of improving the region. I was able to offer my help and support, which proved to be a valuable experience. Such projects have been exceptional opportunities to broaden my existing knowledge on net zero campaigns and build connections both within my department and the wider community.
My experience at TVCA has confirmed my interest in this field and pushed me to look for similar opportunities and experience within Tees Valley in the future. Given the vast array of departments on offer for the intern scheme, it means you can apply the theoretical side of your degrees into the workplace, which will ultimately enhance your qualification.
I would gladly recommend the summer internship scheme to anyone who is looking for practical experience and to develop professional skillsets. I have found it to be an extremely worthwhile opportunity and have gained valuable experience.
