Hi, I’m Noah and I’m studying Economics at Newcastle University. In summer 2024, I completed an eight-week internship working within TVCA’s Economic Intelligence Unit.
I began searching for summer internships last year, as I was keen to gain professional experience. When I came across the TVCA summer internship on LinkedIn, I recognised that working in a Combined Authority would not only provide invaluable insight into the world of work but also help me shape my future career path. I was particularly drawn to the opportunity because of the variety of projects and teams I would be able to work with, as well as the chance to deepen my understanding of the various job opportunities out there. Also, I was eager to develop my understanding of the impact a Combined Authority has on the local community, enhancing my professional and personal growth.
The Economic Intelligence Unit is an integral component of the Investment Development Team. The team specialises in data evaluations, analysing the economic implications of potential policies and business initiatives. Our insights are then channelled to the Policy Team, who are responsible for developing detailed business cases for each project. These business cases are then passed on to the Investment Development project managers, who oversee the project’s execution.
During my time at TVCA, I led my own research project, in which I investigated the challenges that young people face in Tees Valley. This project was particularly engaging, being relevant to my demographic and here I produced a strong report and presentation after the eight weeks. Additionally, I contributed to business case studies, data analysis, financial modelling and collaborated on projects with fellow interns.
Alongside this, I was able to experience the Tees Valley bus tour with the other interns. This helped to put into perspective the work of TVCA and how we impact the region. The tour was rewarding and provided broad exposure to how TVCA fits into a regional and wider national context.
This internship has significantly boosted my confidence for future professional opportunities. It has enhanced my communication, teamwork, and organisational skills. The constant demand to meet deadlines and execute tasks to a high standard has been particularly beneficial. As I return to my third year of university, I hope to apply the skills I have developed, especially towards my dissertation.
Working in a Combined Authority has broadened my understanding of the potential career opportunities available. As I prepare to enter my final year at Newcastle University, I am now inspired to pursue a career in a field related to data or finance.
