I’m Phoebe Richardson, I am currently studying Liberal Arts, majoring in political science, at Leeds University. During my internship I worked in TVCA’s Marketing and Communications Team.
I initially applied for the summer internship as I was keen to get experience in the marketing sector, as this is a path I am considering for prospects, especially related to PR and journalism. The TVCA scheme stood out to me as an exciting and unique opportunity given the flexible working hours and locality of the offices. This meant I was still able to enjoy my summer holidays and stay within the region.
In the team, I completed a wide variety of tasks from gathering social media content and drafting posts, to writing blogs and press releases. Much of my time was dedicated to the project management of two independent campaigns where I completed market research, hosted various meetings, and coordinated outputs across the team. I worked both collaboratively and independently throughout my internship, meaning no two days felt the same.
Being part of such a large organisation, a range of unique opportunities were offered to me including representing TVCA at the Great Yorkshire Ahow and attending a networking event at the Tees Valley Business Summit. I particularly enjoyed getting involved in the Teesside Airport Back in the Black campaign, which celebrated the first profits in over a decade. This was a broad experience where I input my own creative ideas, met with local media teams and engaged with passengers.
As I had no previous marketing experience, I acquired considerable skills and insight. I worked on an array of different digital and social platforms and gained a deep understanding of the mechanics of TVCA and its connections to Teesworks, Teesside International Airport, local and national businesses. I was also able to develop existing soft skills of organisation, communication and adaptability which has boosted my confidence looking ahead to future career prospects.
Finally, the internship has revealed the vast scope of the marketing and communications sector, as well as local opportunities, that I will certainly consider in the future. I give huge thanks to my marketing and comms team who really supported me throughout my time here, ensuring my experience was both enjoyable and worthwhile.
