Hi! I’m Rebecca, a mature student currently studying Accounting and Finance at Teesside University. Over the summer of 2024 I completed a 200-hour paid internship in TVCA’s Finance Team.
I decided to apply for the role as I wanted real life experience working in finance, with the bonus of working in my local area. It was the perfect solution, especially with the flexibility to choose between 100 or 200 hours over ten weeks.
I spent the majority of my time at the Teeswork site working as an Account Assistant and getting involved with the management accounts for South Tees Site Company. I initially started off with the basics and spent time getting to grips with all the different accounting systems. This was a massive help, easing me into my role. Having the opportunity to put into practice what I have been taught at university and helped unlock a whole new dimension to my learning and degree.
The highlight of the ten weeks was the company bus trip, where the interns and I were given a guided tour of some of the key sites and developments that TVCA is involved in. It was helpful to visualise the scale of TVCA’s work and involvement in the region, as well as giving me a better understanding to some of the projects that I had been working on.
One of the biggest projects I worked on was helping to design a new billing tool for water usage at the site. This was a complex task, especially as there were different companies, each needed to be billed correctly. This really pushed me out of my comfort zone and having never done it before, yet this was why I wanted to take part in the internship – to challenge myself and learn new skills.
