Founded by Chris Smith in 2021, CDS Logistics Limited specialises in car storage and transportation services for commercial clients across the UK. With a modern fleet and a focus on tailored solutions and customer satisfaction, the company delivers high-quality vehicle logistics nationwide.

In 2024, CDS Logistics took a significant step forward by expanding into a larger commercial site in Darlington. It allowed the firm to introduce enhanced capabilities including storage, a vehicle preparation workshop, a car registration system, and EV charging stations.

But on the back of this growth, the business wanted to seek expert support to improve its market visibility, strengthen its growth strategy, and broaden industry knowledge.

Challenges to Overcome

Despite the recent investments, CDS Logistics faced key challenges in scaling up its operations.

These included:

  • Stabilising and optimising core operations
  • Leveraging data to inform its business decisions
  • Extending market reach and improving its brand visibility
  • Attracting and converting clients in target sectors

The company aimed to position itself as a top-tier vehicle logistics provider – but needed strategic guidance to navigate its next phase of growth. This is where the Tees Valley Supply Chain Programme helped.

Growing Sustainably

CDS Logistics engaged with the programme through RTC North. An initial meeting resulted in the development of a clear and structured business model, and this helped the company refine its operational vision and long-term growth plan.

From there, RTC provided a range of tailored support services, including in-depth market research by RTC’s specialist team, funding application support and a connection to a local commercial photographer for brand imagery.

They also provided initial guidance on implementing a CRM system for sales and marketing efficiency, the creation of a visual business growth model and help with defining and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs).

They also got some good advice on accessing apprenticeship schemes. In all, it helped build a base to help CDS grow sustainably. CDS Logistics has ultimately been able to sharpen its sales and marketing strategy. This has:

  • Segmented contact lists by industry type, region, and key decision-makers
  • Improved access to priority markets including dealership networks, auction centres, and port operators
  • Led to more effective and personalised client outreach

And these improvements have helped drive up both enquiries and revenue.

What’s Next?

With momentum building, CDS Logistics is now rolling out a new in-house vehicle tracking system. This includes real-time journey updates and photographic records of vehicle conditions at pick-up and drop-off points, ensuring greater transparency and service quality for clients.
