Shape Patisserie & Bake is a Darlington-based bakery and café group with a growing presence across multiple venues, including Banqo, Influence Café and Number 8 Bakehouse.
As the business continues to expand, it has focused on investing in local talent to support its growth and address skills shortages within the sector.
With demand increasing and a limited pool of experienced bakers available, the business identified the need to build its own skilled workforce while contributing to the local community.
Through the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer programme, Shape Patisserie & Bake was able to bring nine young people into the business, providing them with paid placements and access to training and development.
This approach enabled the business to grow its team in a sustainable way, while creating opportunities for young people to enter the workforce.

Trailblazers Aimee Bruce, Gabriel Howard and Caitlin Armstrong.
The programme has strengthened the business by developing a pipeline of skilled staff and supporting its longer-term expansion plans.
Owner Catalin Cirimpei said:
“All the money our customers spend, we’re trying to reinvest in Darlington.”
“It’s unbelievable that somebody thought about this programme to put young people to work and gain skills.”
At the same time, the initiative has delivered wider benefits for the local area, helping young people gain confidence, independence and practical skills that will support their future careers.
With ambitions to expand further across County Durham, Shape Patisserie & Bake plans to continue investing in people as a key part of its growth strategy, ensuring that its success continues to benefit the wider community.
