Life Sciences

The health and life sciences industry is one of our key sectors for economic growth. The region is committed to the development of the sector and is becoming one of the top places in the world to do science-based business. The sector currently contributes £450million of economic output, with over 600 businesses employing more than 5,000 people.

Investor confidence in the area is strong, with internationally recognised companies such as Fujifilm Diosynth Technologies and CPI continuing to invest heavily in the area, alongside SMEs such as Hart Biologicals and Cambridge Research Biochemicals. Central Park in Darlington is fast becoming the place to be for health and life sciences businesses. Home to the National Biologics Manufacturing Centre, Central Park is also set to house the new National Horizons Centre and the proposed new Healthcare Futures Clinic.

Tees Valley combines innovative university research and NHS facilities with a good track record for delivering clinical trials and strong relationships between academic institutions, industry and the NHS. This has created a growing biocluster that makes Tees Valley a world-class centre of excellence for healthcare and life sciences businesses.
