Artists of the Year 2025 FAQs

Last updated: 05/02/2025

1. Could I speak to someone about whether I’m eligible to apply?

Unfortunately we are not able to discuss individual artists’ eligibility or applications. If you have a specific query please email it to [email protected] and we will add it to the FAQs on the Artists of the Year call page. All FAQs received are posted anonymously on the call page. We recommend that you join the webinar on Thursday 16th January, for artists and artist collectives who are considering applying to the programme. There will be an opportunity to ask questions during the webinar. To register click here. The webinar will also be recorded and published to the webpage.

2. I am an artist working professionally part time, I am also a student at college. Am I eligible to apply while I am still studying?

You are eligible to apply if you are working as an artist creating your own original work and meet the other eligibility criteria in the guidance. One of the eligibility criteria is that you must be available to start the programme in April 2025, and you can commit to attending Artists of the Year activity throughout the year, so you would need to consider how your studies would fit around this in your application. If you were to reach the interview stage, this is something that would be discussed with you then.

3. Is it a requirement to be a registered Freelancer/Sole Trader OR partnership, or a company registered with company house?

You are required to be registered as self-employed as a Freelancer/Sole Trader OR partnership, or a company registered with Companies House to be able to receive funding from TVCA. You would also need to have a business bank account that is separate from your personal one that the bursary would be paid into. One of the eligibility criteria is that you intend to earn the majority of your income as a professional artist, so we would expect that you are registered as a Freelancer/Sole Trader OR partnership, or a company registered with Companies House for this purpose.

4. When it comes to professional recognition, does an undergraduate degree count?

An undergraduate degree does not count as professional recognition. Evidence of professional recognition would include, for example, you:
  • were featured or profiled in press/media.
  • had your work shown / performed / exhibited multiple times
  • had a fan-base, audiences, buyers or commissioners
  • publishing credits
  • won an award
  • earned income as a result of your creative output

5. The guidance states writers can submit "Fiction / Non-fiction: 3000–6000 words and a synopsis of up to 600 words." I am a published author, can I submit my book? If I cannot submit it, can I send chapters from the book?

You can submit a relevant excerpt/chapters from your book, up to the word count stated in the guidance. You can also upload a synopsis to give an overview of the work if you wish.

6. Can those who applied last year and were offered mentoring (but did not win artist of the year) reapply this year?

Yes, those who applied last year and were offered / received mentoring (but did not win Artist of the Year) can reapply this year.

7. Firstly - is it possible to apply again having been shortlisted last year? Secondly - is it possible to arrange a short discussion with a member of the team to ask more detailed questions about the application when applying for a second time and what information you would expect to see to demonstrate what has changed.

Yes, artists who were shortlisted in Artists of the Year 2024 can apply again.
Unfortunately we are not able to discuss individual artists’ applications. If you have a specific query please email it to [email protected] and we will add it to the FAQs page.
All applications will be assessed on their own merits, and will not be compared to previous applications. We are interested in where you are now, and why you feel now is the best time for you to benefit from this opportunity.

8. We are two professional musicians from Tees Valley, we would like to apply to Artists of the year as a duo. Would we be eligible to apply though as a duo when we haven't got our songs on Spotify/iTunes yet?

You can apply as a duo if you can both evidence professional recognition as individuals. If you have evidence of your work together, please also include this.

9. I require help filling in the application, how do I go about it?

If you have specific access needs, please email [email protected] and let us know what kind of support you need. We will do our best to find this support for you to enable you to fill in the form. We are unable to discuss the content of individual applications. If you prefer to speak to someone about your access needs, please call 07443 346272.

10. Could you tell me if being on the ASpire programme would have any impact on selection for the Tees Valley Artist of the year 2025, bearing in mind that there seems to be an overlap on the two programmes.

You are still able to apply for Artists of the Year 2025 if you are on the current ASPire programme.

11. I am interested in viewing the artist of the year 2025 applications webinar, that I unfortunately was unable to watch live. I am struggling to find the upload on your website; would it be possible to be given a link or otherwise be directed to it.

The webinar is available to view on the following link – https://teesvalley-ca.gov.uk/business/tees-valley-artists-of-the-year-2025/

12. How would somebody that would like help filling in the application. They need to explain what it is they do and they find that that's kind of much easier to do face to face.

If you have specific access needs, please email [email protected] and let us know what kind of support you need. We will do our best to find this support for you to enable you to fill in the form. We are unable to discuss the content of individual applications. If you prefer to speak to someone about your access needs, please call 07443 346272
In the application form you are able to answer the main question ‘why you’ by submitting a video, which gives you the opportunity to speak in a more ‘face to face’ way to tell us about yourself and your work.

13. RE: Professional Recognition - where / how do we share industry reviews or panel feedback from Awards?

You can include excerpts or links to reviews and/or panel feedback in the portfolio submission section or the ‘Why You’ section about your current work.

14. The £6000 towards development, is that an upper limit or can it be put towards something that costs more than that?

The development budget is for you to use alongside your development plan to help you achieve the goals you set out. It can be used to match against other budgets, and be put towards other costs including equipment, other people’s time, attendance at events. We will work with you to make sure the development budget is allocated in a smart way to get the most out of it. For more information on the development budget and bursary, see the webinar here at 42 mins 21 sec.

15. What are you looking for in that ‘career tipping point’ moment? Some of last year's winners have tried something new, others have extended what they already do. So are you looking for a definite ‘change’?

The tipping point we hope to see articulated is a clear understanding of the next phase of your professional journey which this programme could help you to accelerate towards. It will likely include a wider level of recognition and engagement and could also include: diversification of work with expansion into new areas, levelling-up the audiences you’re currently reaching or platforms you’re presenting your work through, securing key partnerships etc. We expect to be able to understand any barriers that might have prevented you from making these steps previously and also why what you hope to achieve will support you to build your career more sustainably.

16. Does the artist own the work they produce and if sold, is any percentage expected by the program?

The work artists produce during the Artists of the Year programme is theirs and TVCA doesn’t own any IP or expect any royalty for this. The bursary is supporting your time for development and is not a commission of work.
We do ask that successful Artists of the Year are advocates for the programme in their networks and in press and PR about their work, and that they engage in evaluation and press/PR during the year about their work and involvement in the programme.

17. How important is it to articulate the structural barriers to your progression?

If there are barriers that you have experienced, we really need to understand those so we can consider how best to support you, should you be successful in your application. This will look different for different people depending on their circumstances. We are looking for an understanding of challenges and the kind of difference this programme could make and how it could help to overcome them. Explaining the barriers is not assessed in terms of the eligibility for the programme, but if there are significant barriers and you know what would make the difference to overcome those, it’s worth telling us.

18. How focused and singular are you hoping the ambitious goal of an applicant will be? As creatives, we have a variety of ambitious goals. We know we could take a powerful run out with this support. Are you more looking for one key goal to tackle?

The application does not have to focus on one goal. The journey to your ultimate goal could be complex and multifaceted – because so many portfolio careers are. The goals that you put into the application form could be the top three things you want to achieve – but these don’t all have to be related to the same piece of work, for example. Artists of the Year are able to refine their development goals, with support, when making their development plan. We want you to get the most out of the time, so would support you to focus on and prioritise areas for development.

19. Does the referee need to be from Tees Valley?

No.

20. If you're not currently earning the bulk of your income from your creative practice, will that reduce your chances of success?

The programme will require your time to take part. The idea of the bursary is for you to be able to dedicate your time to the programme. The bursary is equivalent to the real living wage. There is going to be a significant time commitment so we would need to be sure you could fit that around any existing employment / time commitments. We would like to see the intention to transition to earning the majority of your income from your creative practice in the future, although this doesn’t necessarily need to be within the Artist of the Year 2025 year of support.

21. Would the selected artists be expected to give up any part-time work they currently do to participate in this programme?

If you have work that is already committed for the year, we would need to make sure you can work around this to meet the significant time commitment of the programme. The bursary will hopefully mean that artists can say ‘no’ to some of the work that they may otherwise have felt they had to take and, instead, focus on the pursuing their goals within the programme. It will also mean that artists can say ‘yes’ to opportunities they may otherwise have felt they had to let pass by. We do try to be as flexible as possible in terms of making dates work for the artists and understand that, as professionals, there will be established working relationships that will need to be maintained.

22. What about if people are unemployed or on benefits?

We are not able to advise on an individual’s benefits as each person’s situation will be different and may be affected in different ways. We would encourage you to speak to your benefits provider or citizens advice to ask them about your specific circumstances and how receiving a grant would affect your benefits. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/

23. I’ve seen from the FAQ’s that I’m able to reapply this year. Just wondering if I can use the same referee and reference as last time? Or would you suggest having new ones?

You can have the same referee as last time you applied. They will need to provide an up to date reference.

24. On the application form it says up to 7 examples of work but then it says no more than 8 on another part of the form too. Can you please clarify how many work examples I'm allowed to submit, is it 7 or 8 please?

You are able to upload 7 documents to show the quality of your original creative work. This can include examples of your work or reviews, photos etc. 1 of these 7 must be evidence of professional recognition.
If you are uploading a video to answer the ‘why you’ question instead of writing your response, you also add that here, which would make it 8 uploads.
If you are not uploading a video in answer to the ‘why you’ question, you should only upload 7 pieces.
Please refer to the guidance on the submission page of the zealous application form.

25. When I went through the questions, one question was has your art received and professional recognition or something like that. I would like to know what you mean by this question as got feedback from a lot of professions Doctors, psychologists, members of parliament, royal employees, police, and other people at the top of their profession.

By professional recognition, we mean that your original work as an artist has been recognised in a creative or cultural professional setting, for example –
▪ been featured or profiled in press / media.
▪ had your work shown / performed / exhibited multiple times
▪ a fan-base, audiences, buyers or commissioners
▪ publishing credits
▪ won an award
▪ earned income as a result of your creative output
This list is not exhaustive, there could be other similar recognition you have received. This, and other eligibility criteria is set out on page 4 of the guidance here.

26. I currently work full time and was wondering whether artists who have previously been granted the award are usually freelance full time; or whether it is possible to work whilst taking part in the programme? Does being employed (additional to freelance work) affect applicant eligibility at all?

There is a large time commitment for the Artists of the Year. The bursary is designed to support this time.
Part of the eligibility criteria is that you intend to earn the majority of your income through your creative practice (we would expect to see a move towards this if it’s not already the case), and that you are available to attend the activity across the year.
In your application, you would need to demonstrate that these eligibility criteria can be met given your current circumstances.

27. Are the training and coaching sessions on fixed dates throughout the year, or are these flexible?

We try to be as flexible as possible when arranging activities around artists avilability, but there will be some fixed dates for training and events that are not able to change. We intend to give as much advance notice of the commitment / dates for the year as possible.

28. "If you are unsuccessful in this year's application, are you able to apply for next year? If so, do you also have more of a chance if you have previously applied? "

Yes, you would still be able to apply for future years of Artists of the Year.
Applications will be taken on their own merit and will not be compared with past applications.

29.1 A lack of time and money has prevented me from properly taking my artistry to a public audience. Therefore, I do not have the professional reference. As well as this, I am not currently registered with HMRC. With this in mind, is it still worth me applying for the program?

The eligibility for the programme includes:
– You have received some kind of professional recognition for your work and,
– You are a registered Freelancer / Sole Trader OR a Partnership OR a Company registered with Companies House. (see previous response to question 3)
Your reference can be from someone who is familiar with your work and is a professional in their field – this could be a senior course leader, or a creative professional with an established track record.

30. I have read the guidance but I don’t understand what [registered as a freelancer/sole trader] means. I have a UTR number, does that mean I am registered as a sole trader?

To be eligible for the programme, if you are applying as an individual, you need to be registered as self-employed with HMRC.

31. I saw your incredible opportunity and wanted to see if I met the criteria to apply. I am a published author and director of a CIC [...] I live in North Tyneside but work across the region. I have worked in Teesside. [...]

As stated in the eligibility criteria, applicants ‘must live in the Tees Valley and can demonstrate your connection and commitment to the Tees Valley, and / or you have an operational base in the Tees Valley and the majority of your work is delivered / made in the
Tees Valley.’

32. My 12 years old daughter is very passionate about the Arts. We reside in the Tees Valley area where she schools and trains. She is very dedicated to her craft and has shown immense commitment to her future career in theatre arts. She has won many competitions in the Tees valley area and this has gained recognition for her hard-work. She has performed in musicals [...] where she played a lead role and had her west end debut . I wanted to know if she will be eligible to apply for this funding towards her training and development towards her dream of being on the broadway.

Unfortunately your daughter will not be eligible for the programme, as she is under 18. The programme is for professional artists who create their own original work.

33. I was just wondering if the North East / Newcastle is included in the applicable region for this opportunity?

Please see question 31. This opportunity is specifically for those based (domestically and / or professionally) in the Tees Valley.

34. I am uploading evidence for my application to the Artists of the Year award and have two You Tube extracts I’d like to put forward - they both exceed the 5 mins, and because they are from TV shows and a podcast I can’t make them any shorter. Is it still acceptable to include them?

You can upload a document to the submission page showing the link and the time stamp of the section of the video you would like us to watch. (each section should not exceed 5 mins.)

35. I am a musician and I live in Tees Valley, but most of my gigs are outside of the area. I make all of my music in Tees Valley. Does this count for the connection to Tees Valley?

You need to show in your application that you are based in and committed to working in Tees Valley, this can include that you live and make work here.

36. I have two options for my reference, one is a local music industry professional who I know well, the other is a national more senior music industry professional. Would it be better to go with a local person who knows me better?

It is up to you to decide who would give you the best reference. We are interested to hear about you and your work and your readiness for this programme. The content of the reference is more important than the job title of the referee.

37. I have a question about which category to apply. I am performer and the majority of my 18 year career has been in live performance, however more recently I am gaining performing work and exploring work in Screen (Film/TV). I am unsure therefore which category I should be ticking? I am hoping the grant would mostly support and propel my work in Screen.

Please choose the option that is most closely aligned with your work as an artist. You are able to explain in the form section if you feel your work aligns with more than one category, and you can explain your ambitions in the ‘Why You’ sections.
