The Redcar and Cleveland Voluntary Development Agency (RCVDA) is a social action organisation that works to support local charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises to make a positive chance in communities. It delivers the Tees Valley Wheels 2 Work programme on behalf of the Tees Valley Combined Authority.

The Wheels 2 Work initiative aims to help those in the Tees Valley who do not have easy access to public transport or a private vehicle secure affordable transport so they can get to their job or education. The initial three-year pilot offered subsidised hire of 50cc and 125cc petrol motor scooters.

To deliver a more environmentally sustainable service, as the scheme was extended, a decision was made to turn to electric motorbikes which, operating 75 scooters and two electric vans, would see a saving of almost 200 tonnes of CO2 over three years.

RCVDA worked with V-Moto, the importers of the Super-Soco Electric Motorbike range to develop bespoke training for its team to the motorbikes could be kept in top condition. Clients have embraced these enthusiastically, with RCVDA’s operating costs reduced significantly and participants finding their costs reduced to less than 10% of the petrol equivalent.
