  • Both the Mayor of Middlesbrough Chris Cooke and Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen have pledged to remove the cycleway.
  • The Tees Valley Combined Authority alongside Middlesbrough Council is seeking views on how this can happen and its plans to reinstate the road in 2025.

Issue

The existing cycle lane and associated works on Linthorpe Road have posed some issues for road users and access issues for some businesses. Other issues include:

·       The perception feedback from some businesses is loading and parking has been more difficult.

·       Lost parking after the changes.

Opportunity

·       The proposal is to reinstate the previous layout by removing the cycle lanes. The closure of Victoria Street would be retained.

·       This could boost trade for businesses and bring back parking spaces and loading bays.

·       Approximately 50 parking spaces and loading access would be reinstated to support businesses.

Benefits

·       Better access for businesses and residents to and from Linthorpe Road.

·       Support the economy along Linthorpe Road and the wider area through increased parking and loading bay availability.

·       Bus islands taken out to remove potential conflict between cyclists and bus users.

Impact

·       Disruption to residents and businesses during reinstatement will be mitigated through appropriate work times and construction methods wherever possible.

·       Returning the road to its previous layout supporting businesses and the wider economy.
