Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan – Linthorpe and Woodland Road Phase 1
Phase 1 consultation was held between December 2020 and February 2021. The Woodland Road scheme is currently being finalised for delivery whilst the Linthorpe Road scheme is currently being delivered.
Middlesbrough: Linthorpe Road
The Linthorpe Road corridor links Middlesbrough town centre to Acklam via Linthorpe Village. Through our analysis, we have identified that there is high potential for cycling between the town centre and areas to the south, such as Teesside University, Albert Park, the Dorman Museum, and the residential areas of Linthorpe and Acklam. This corridor will link into sections of the Tees Valley cycling and walking network that have recently been delivered, which provide onward links to Thornaby and Stockton.
Phase 1 delivery will link Borough Road to Ayresome Street through a mix of protected space for cycling on the highway and improved road crossings for cyclists and pedestrians. The aims of making these significant improvements to the existing infrastructure are improved safety, a reduction in air pollution, reduced congestion, improved journey time and improved public realm.

Darlington: Woodland Road
The A68 Woodland Road corridor links Darlington town centre to Cockerton. Woodland Road is a key transport corridor in Darlington, and our analysis showed that there is a significant potential for cycling between the town centre and areas to the north west including Darlington Memorial Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, Cockerton, West Park and Faverdale. Some sections of the corridor linking to West Park and Faverdale have recently been delivered.
Phase 1 delivery will link Darlington Memorial Hospital to Darlington town centre through a mix of protected space for cycling on the highway, improved road crossings for cyclists and pedestrians and quieter back streets. This phase will focus on work from Hollyhurst Road junction to the town centre via Outram Street and Duke Street. The aim is to increase footfall for local businesses, create a vibrant space, as well as improving air quality, health and wellbeing, safety and accessibility.
