Redcar Town Centre to West Dyke Road: Improving Local Travel in Redcar
Walking, Wheeling, and Cycling Improvements
In January 2023, the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) received £20.8 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. The goal is to make it easier for people to get around by walking, biking, or using wheelchairs and mobility aids. This is especially helpful for short trips to places like work, school, shops, and healthcare.
One of the projects being funded is an upgrade to National Cycle Network Route 1 along West Dyke Road. A new path will also lead to Redcar Primary Care Hospital. The improved route will run from the railway level crossing to a point east of the hospital near Lorton Road.
What You Told Us
- People were asked to share their thoughts on travel improvements in Tees Valley during summer 2024. There were several in-person events where people could give feedback.
- Another round of more detailed engagement with public events happened in early 2025. These events were advertised on social media and letters were sent to the properties fronting the planned route from Saltburn to Marske.
We gathered feedback from:
- Recent engagement event held in early 2025
- A Road Safety Audit
- A panel of experts who reviewed the design (Active Travel England)
What’s Changing based on Feedback
- Cartmel Road and Lingmell Road:
The new cycle path will run next to the existing footpath where there’s enough room. One tree in poor condition and causing damage to the existing footpath will be removed.
- West Dyke Road (next to the Racecourse):
The two-way cycle path will now be closer to the racecourse fence, while the footpath stays near the road. This gives more space at bus stops (2.5 metres for bus boarding). Following a tree survey, one tree is in poor health (due to ash dieback and branch damage) this will be removed and replaced.
- Signage:
New fingerpost signs (direction signs) will be added along the route.
- Safety and Anti-Social Behaviour:
People were concerned about crime and off-road bikes. Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council are putting a case forward for funding to install a CCTV camera to help deal with this, while keeping the path open for everyone.
- End of Route:
The northern end of the route will now finish at the end of the alley between Sandringham Road and Redcar Station car park. There are no plans to change the car park.

Previous Consultations
We Listened in July-August 2024
Between July and August 2024, we asked for your feedback on a range of potential improvements to help improve journeys in Redcar Town Centre for people walking, wheeling, cycling, and using the bus. This included gathering feedback on a potential solution on West Dyke Road to make it safer and easier for people walking and cycling, by providing a new cycle lane and improving road crossings, with the aim of making walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more attractive travel options.
Your feedback included:
- You agreed that there were issues in the town centre, particularly with buses.
- You were supportive of measures to improve the layout of junctions and roads, and improving paths for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
- Some concerns were raised over the proposed bidirectional cycle lane on West Dyke Road, and the loss of right turn lanes to access the side streets.
- You highlighted several other issues in the town centre, including concerns over illegal parking and traffic congestion.
Taking your view on board
We have considered your feedback and updated the plans for West Dyke Road connecting into Redcar Town Centre based on what you told us. The updated designs for West Dyke Road seek to improve connections between the Hospital, Lakes Primary School and Sandringham Road.
The plans are as follows:
- A continuous walking, wheeling and cycling route linking Redcar Primary Care Hospital, Lakes Primary School and the train station.
- Proposing segregated cycle/footway facilities along the route achieving a bi-directional cycle track or shared use facility depending on width constraints.
- All right-hand turns have been retained in the designs.
- No trees are proposed to be removed.
- Plans include upgrading an existing uncontrolled crossing to a zebra crossing, two new parallel crossings and an existing traffic island is to be replaced with a new toucan crossing, improving layout and safety along the route.
- There are plans to improve Moore Street, currently in development and will be available for public review in spring 2025.
