Connecting Communities – from Wynyard to Hartlepool Town Centre

We want your views on the Wolviston to Cowpen Bewley Active Travel Route

We are set to deliver a new active travel route – for walking, wheeling, and cycling to better connect Wynard Business Park, Wolviston, Billingham, Greatham, and Hartlepool.   Our aim is to give people more choices for how they travel.

We’re planning to improve the paths and road safety between Wolviston and Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park. This is one part of a bigger plan to build a safe, connected active travel route so people can travel without using a car – from Wynyard to Hartlepool Town Centre.

The full active travel route from Wynyard to Hartlepool will be delivered in 4 parts:

  1. Wynard Business Park to Wolviston (starting Autumn 2025)

Improvements to the A19/A689 Wolviston Interchange will create a better connection between Wynyard Business Park and Wolviston. This work includes:

  • An extra traffic lane on the north side of the A19/A689 junction (direction of Wynyard to Wolviston) to help ease congestion.
  • A new footbridge for pedestrians, wheelchair users, cyclists, and equestrians over the A19 – offering a safer, more convenient way to cross the A19.

2. Wolviston to Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park

The next step will be to improve the active travel route path between Wolviston and Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park, and we would like your feedback on these plans. Improvements to this part of the route include:

  • Traffic calming and speed reduction through Wolviston, to provide a safe environment for walkers and wheelers to move freely, and cyclists to share the road with motor vehicles.
  • Widening of the path and crossings around the A689 Wolviston Road Roundabout, to provide a shared space for walkers, wheelers, and cyclists to move safely around the junction.
  • An upgrade to Wolviston Back Lane between the A689 Wolviston Road Roundabout and Marsh House Avenue, with an upgraded crossing of Longfellow Road and an improved space for walking, wheeling, and cycling.
  • Traffic calming and speed reduction along Wolviston Back Lane between Marsh House Avenue and Low Grange Avenue, to provide a safe environment for walkers and wheelers to move freely, and cyclists to share the road with motor vehicles.
  • A speed reduction on the A1185 between Marsh House Avenue and the railway line, to facilitate safer crossings for walking, wheeling, and cycling.
  • An upgrade to the existing track between the Low Grange Avenue and Cowpen Woodland Park, with safer crossings and an improved space for walking, wheeling, and cycling.
