Frequently Asked Questions - Linthorpe Road Cycleway Removal

Why are we doing this?

Upon completion in September 2022, the scheme attracted some negative headlines in the local press when several people were injured after tripping over the orcas which had been installed. While the orcas were replaced, and a few other improvements were then made to the original scheme, concerns continued to be expressed by many businesses about the impact of the scheme, specifically the loss of parking and loading space.

How will the layout on Linthorpe Road be changed?

The cycle lane between Borough Road and Ayresome Street will be removed, and the road will be put back to its original layout. Our aim is to maintain the Victoria Road closure and reinstate car parking and bus stops.

How will this be funded?

Tees Valley Combined Authority will be funding this project.  The scheme is currently being designed and costs will be confirmed once this has been finalised.

Are there any alternatives routes for the cycle lane?

Tees Valley Combined Authority and Middlesbrough Council have worked closely to explore potential alternative routes for the cycle lane. Currently, there are no better direct routes between Linthorpe and Middlesbrough Town Centre, so we may consider exploring alternative routes that exclude Linthorpe Road.

How many car parking spaces will be reinstated?

As part of the removal of the cycle lane, approximately 50 short-stay parking spaces will be reinstated, as the original road layout.

Will the bus stops be reinstated to how they used to look?

Yes, all bus stops will be put back to their original design and layout meaning that the current bus islands along Linthorpe Road will be removed. This will reduce interactions between pedestrians, cyclists and bus users.

Will you be creating more cycle lanes in Middlesbrough?

As identified in our Local Cycling and Walking Improvement Programme, we want to encourage more journeys by walking, wheeling, and cycling. We have an ambitious programme of sustainable transport improvements which includes more cycle lanes in Middlesbrough. You can currently provide your feedback on these schemes on our website.

How long will the consultation run until?

The surveys will be accessible on our website until Monday 2nd September.

How can I have my say?

The easiest way to have your say is to go to our website, look at the consultation material and complete the feedback survey. Paper copies can be provided on request. You can also submit questions, by email to: [email protected], post a response to: Transport Consultations, Tees Valley Combined Authority, Teesside Airport Business Suite, Teesside International Airport, Darlington DL2 1NJ.

How will I know you have considered my feedback?

We will not be able to respond directly to everyone who submits feedback, but we will carefully consider all the feedback received and ensure the information is considered by design teams. A consultation summary report will be made available after all feedback has been analysed and considered.

What are the next steps?

We will gather and review all feedback received during this public engagement both through feedback questionnaires and public drop in events. Your views are important to us, and this is an opportunity to provide comments on the current proposed schemes to help shape the detailed design stage. We will document the process and publish the results in a consultation report.

More detailed designs will be produced before any construction takes place and we will keep you informed.
