‘Make or Break’ For Middlesbrough Mayoral Development Corporation As Asset List Revealed

A crunch meeting is to take place over the future of Middlesbrough’s new Mayoral Development Corporation.

Middlesbrough Councillors will have their say on the new Corporation covering Middlehaven, the town centre, and the Zetland Historic Quarter at an Extraordinary Council meeting on Friday, 24 February.

The new zone is designed to transform the town by driving investment and cutting red tape. Its boundary will include crucial assets such as the Boho zone, Middlesbrough Station, the Northern School of Art, Centre Square, and Teesside University.

Middlesbrough Football Club, Union Village, at Gresham and the area behind Sainsbury’s between the A66 and North Road are also included within its boundary.

A list of assets to transfer to the Corporation will be under consideration including The Civic Centre, The Crown, and Middlesbrough Dock.

Broadcasting House, on Newport Road, and units under the A66 along Wilson Street are also set to come into the Corporation’s ownership.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “For generation after generation Middlesbrough has been forgotten and left to fall behind.

“Our new Mayoral Development Corporation will take the desperately needed action the town needs to supercharge development and pump pride back into the soul of Middlesbrough.

“The recent loss of Marks and Spencer is just another example of the enormous need for change – and the Development Corporation will provide the means to truly unleash the town’s potential.

“This is make or break time. Councillors can choose to join us in backing the millions of pounds and hope this will bring to the town, or they can choose to retain the status quo of stagnation and steady decline.

“Middlesbrough has had more masterplans than I’ve had hot dinners – but we’ve now actually got the means to truly deliver on fantastic bold plans for Gresham, Middlehaven, and a raft of vital sites across the town centre. I truly hope councillors back us in what we want to achieve.”

The list of assets set to come under the Corporation’s ownership includes:

  • Station Street Car Park, Marsh Road – 116 spaces
  • Units under the A66 along Wilson Street on the south side of Brunswick
  • Exchange Walk and Royal Exchange Place
  • The Amber Street Car Park, Gresham
  • The Crown, Gresham, land behind the site and three nearby properties on Linthorpe Road
  • Amber Street Car Park – Gresham
  • Buxton Street Car Park and Jurys Inn Car Park – total 115 spaces combined
  • The Civic Centre former Council offices
  • Broadcasting House
  • Sainsbury’s site, Wilson Street
  • Middlesbrough Bus Station
  • Almost 40 acres at Middlehaven, Middlesbrough Dock and surrounding land

Legislation was officially laid before Parliament for the towns’ respective Mayoral Development Corporations earlier this month.

Middlesbrough Council will meet on Friday, 24 February at 6pm.
