Mayor Calls For Young People To Join Summer Intern Scheme

Tees Valley Mayor | Published on: 22nd June 2021

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has today (22 June) urged young people from across the region to apply to join his Summer Intern Scheme at the Combined Authority.

Applications are now open for six-week placements within the organisation, starting on 21 July and running until the end of August.

Young people from the Tees Valley who are completing A-levels or equivalent, or students who are currently studying at university can apply.

The roles pay the real living wage of £9.50 per hour, with the successful candidates working in a number of departments across the organisation, in anything from transport, business or IT to culture, education, HR and investment planning.

The move comes after the Mayor and Combined Authority took on seven new members of staff under the Government’s Kickstart scheme and follows a long history of supporting apprentices and trainees. To date we have helped create 634 placements at 186 businesses across the region through the kickstart scheme.

Mayor Houchen said: “I’ve always said that one of the most important things that we can do is to help connect our young people with our brilliant businesses across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool to show them that they can have a successful career right here.

“But we also need to put our money where our mouth is, so that’s why we’re launching the latest opportunities for would-be interns, who can join our growing list of apprentices, kickstarters and trainees.

“I have spent the past few years calling on our employers to pay the real living wage, and that’s exactly what we’re doing here. We’re giving students money in their pockets while they’re gaining valuable experience of a working environment and learning about the fantastic work we’re doing across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.

“It’s a great environment with a dedicated team and because we work across so many areas and with so many other businesses and organisations, it could really open up future opportunities. So, if you’re a hard-working student keen to go further and help shape your area, I’d urge you to apply.”
