RWE Renewables is one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies, with onshore and offshore wind farms, photo photovoltaic plants and battery storage facilities with a combined capacity of approximately nine gigawatts. From 2020 to 2022, RWE Renewables aims to invest five billion euros net into renewable energy.
Through generation of power from wind, RWE Renewables’ Sofia Wind Farm aims to help the UK decarbonise by producing enough energy to power around 1.2million UK homes. Once operations, the energy will save more than 2.5million tonnes of carbon emissions per year when compared to fossil fuel use.
Now under construction, the 1.4GW Sofia will be one of the largest wind farms in the world, as well as one of the farthest from shore. The project is situated in the Dogger Bank area of the North Sea, comprising of 100 of the world’s most powerful turbines, with electricity transported to a new onshore converter station in Redcar, Teesside.
The project represents an almost £3billion investment into the UK’s electrical infrastructure.
