New Careers Scheme Is Launched Across Tees Valley

The Tees Valley Combined Authority has launched a new initiative which aims to ensure that impartial careers advice and guidance is provided for young people across the region.

The Careers and Enterprise Company which is a national programme supported by £20m of government funding, aims to develop the quality of careers, enterprise and employer engagement programmes in schools and colleges.

Each school or college in the initiative will be linked with its own Careers and Enterprise Adviser from a local business. Among those signed up so far are Elringklinger, Premier Inn, Workwise Personnel, PBR Coaching, CPI and Aldi.

Working alongside a Careers and Enterprise Coordinator, each adviser will work with a school on a one-to-one basis to help motivate students to develop their future career prospects, as well as supporting the development of a strategy for careers, enterprise and employer engagement. Students will also benefit from being able to build connections through their adviser’s local business network.

Linda Edworthy, Director of Strategy and Investment at Tees Valley Combined Authority, said: “The Careers and Enterprise Company initiative looks to develop vital links between schools and employers across the Tees Valley. The scheme hopes to help students strengthen their future career prospects, whilst also allowing employers to support the development of their potential future workforce.

“The initiative aims to help bridge the gap between education and the workplace, motivating young people to create links with local businesses in preparation for leaving school or college.”

Amy Smith, Learning & Development Manager at CPI, added: “CPI is delighted to join the Careers and Enterprise Company. It is a fantastic opportunity to motivate young people to consider their career options from a young age. The scheme will co-ordinate activity in this area, helping to break down the boundaries between schools and jobs and help us to inspire our potential future employees.”

Pam Hanrahan, Headteacher at St Peter’s Catholic Voluntary Academy said “Ensuring our students leave not only with qualifications, but also with knowledge of the opportunities open to them is vital to increasing their aspirations. At St Peter’s we are committed to giving every student the widest range of interventions possible to ensure they make informed decisions, and are enthused about their future. We see being part of the Tees Valley Careers & Enterprise Initiative as an excellent way of achieving this aim”.
