The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is the latest attraction that will be roaring into the skies above Teesside this summer as part of the Teesside Airshow, it was announced today (6 April).

The Teesside Airshow, which is being put on by Skylive Air, is the only one taking place in the North of England in 2022 – returning to Teesside Airport on 11 June after a five-year grounding.

The internationally recognisable Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which was inaugurated on 11 July 1957, will be bringing six iconic spitfires and two Hurricanes, flown by regular RAF aircrew, to the event.

The aircraft are regularly seen as part of major celebrations and commemorations, featuring in public and military events and State occasions, and their appearance at the Teesside Airshow will come hot off the heels of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, taking place the weekend prior.

The Memorial Flight is the latest RAF team to be announced for the Teesside Airshow, following the news that the Eurofighter Typhoon will appear, along with the Red Arrows and the Red Falcons parachute display team. There is much more on offer too, with an exhibition of 300 classic cars, funfair, live music, strongman contest and food stalls.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight has been at the centre of every major State celebration and commemoration for more than 70 years, and it will be a fantastic addition to a day that was already a must-see summer event.

“They will be showing off the best of our RAF’s past which complements the cutting-edge technology of the present, with the Eurofighter Typhoon also taking to the skies on the day.

“I have no doubt this will be an inspirational display and prove another huge draw as we look to attract 25,000 people from Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool as well as much further afield. Teesside Airshow is the only game in town, literally, with the nearest taking place more than 120 miles away, and I’d urge people to get their tickets now.”

Steve Davies, Director of SkyLive Air, said: “It’s great to be able to welcome the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Team as the latest group to join us for our event. The team keeps our wartime aviation history alive, with stunning aircraft that you can’t see together anywhere else.

“It will be a privilege to welcome them, along with the Typhoon display team, Red Arrows and Red Falcons, as we make this the biggest and best airshow the region has seen yet, giving families a brilliant day out while highlighting our heritage and celebrating our current Royal Air Force personnel.”

Tickets are on sale now priced at £10 per adult, £5 per child. A family ticket, consisting of two adults and two children, will be £25 and there is free entry for those aged under six.

The Teesside Airport Foundation will be the charity partner for the event.
