Tees Valley Combined Authority | Published on: 26th April 2021
Time is running out for anyone who wants to apply for a proxy vote for this year’s Tees Valley Mayoral Election, however new rules have been introduced that will let those self-isolating on election day secure a last-minute emergency proxy.
A proxy vote is where you may obtain permission for somebody to vote on your behalf if you are physically unable to attend a polling station on the day of the election.
In limited circumstances – such as being away on polling day, having a medical issue or disability or not being able to vote because of work or military service – individuals can apply to have a trusted person vote on their behalf.
Applications for such a proxy vote must be on the desk of their local Electoral Registration office by 5pm on Tuesday, 27 April. However, as a response to the coronavirus pandemic, an emergency proxy vote has also been introduced for all local elections taking place, with the application deadline set for 5pm on polling day.
To be eligible, you must have had an emergency which means you can’t vote in person that you were not aware of before the normal proxy vote deadline. This could be if you are self-isolating due to the coronavirus, have another medical emergency or are away for work.
On Thursday, 6th May, people from Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees can vote for their Tees Valley Mayor.
The Mayor is responsible for so many aspects of life in the Tees Valley, including attracting investment, supporting business to create jobs, developing transport links, tourism and skills in the region.
By voting in the Mayoral election, you can get your voice heard on the future of the region and how you would like to see it shaped – even if you find yourself self-isolating on the day.
