Students in Redcar and Cleveland can scoop a £5,000 scholarship to support their further education studies, thanks to the firms behind the Dogger Bank wind farm.

SSE Renewables, Equinor and Eni are building the world’s largest wind farm just 80 miles off the north-east coast and are now offering 37 grants to local students to help them prepare for work in the cleaner, healthier and safer industries of the future, including the offshore wind industry.

Young people going on to further education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects can take advantage of the offer, which will help towards their tuition fees.

Redcar and Cleveland is home to Teesworks, the UK’s biggest industrial zone and heart of the Teesside Freeport, and is also where Dogger Bank connects to the National Grid. The region is currently at the forefront of the Green Industrial Revolution, with huge schemes in offshore wind and low carbon industries.

Thousands of jobs in the clean energy and low carbon technology sectors are coming to the region with projects like SeAH Wind’s mammoth £400million offshore wind facility which will serve Dogger Bank through the under-development South Bank Quay. Net Zero Teesside Power is bringing its gas-fired power plant with carbon capture, utilisation and storage capabilities to Teesworks, along with game-changing hydrogen schemes being driven by the likes of bp, Kellas Midstream and Northern Gas Networks, plus many more.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Right now Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool are at the centre of the Government’s drive to reach net zero by 2050 and this means we’re securing huge investments that are delivering thousands of good-quality, well-paid jobs for local workers.

“But it is essential that local people, especially those that are currently going through education, have the right skills to take advantage of the amazing opportunities that lie ahead. This funding is a fantastic chance for our talented students to get a leg-up on the path to a rewarding career in the cleaner, healthier and safer industries of the future.

“World-renowned businesses are now calling our region home with transformative projects that will create jobs for generations to come. Global firms already based here are investing like never before too, proving that young people can stay local but go far and take pride in being at the forefront of the UK’s net zero ambitions.

“I’d encourage any of our ambitious young people to check this great scholarship scheme out to assist them on their path to success.”

The latest round of the scholarship fund is open for applications from students in Redcar and Cleveland until 1 September 2022. For more information, visit https://doggerbank.com/about/community/
