Hundreds of young people have heard from leading global businesses thriving on their doorsteps at a packed apprenticeship event.
More than 40 employers and organisations attended Teesside International Airport terminal on Thursday evening (27 February) to show the raft of opportunities they have on offer to stay local and go far.
Major projects are taking shape across our region in engineering, aerospace, low carbon and offshore industries – with thousands of jobs being created.
Led by the Combined Authority’s Tees Valley Careers Hub, the fully-booked event hosted the Army and the Navy, Huntsman, Balfour Beatty, Willis, Airbourne Colours and Draken, alongside colleges and training providers, such as Middlesbrough and Hartlepool Colleges, The Etc and Teesside University to show off the opportunities available.
There was also a stall showing the opportunities on offer at Teesside Airport.
The event featured a talk from ASK Programme (Apprenticeship Support and Knowledge) and Teesside University where those attending learned about how to look for an apprenticeship, how much you can expect to earn and what Teesside University has to offer in degree level apprenticeships.
Neil Young, from the Teesworks Skills Academy, also revealed more about the huge developments on the Teesworks site and the opportunities available for young people right now and in the future.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “We’ve laid the foundations for thousands of well-paid jobs for of people across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool through huge projects – but ensuring our next generation of talent and those looking for work get these jobs is vital.
“Apprenticeships are absolutely fantastic for getting people into work and helping them secure vital experience they need on their path to a rewarding career.
“With billions of pounds of investment coming into our clean energy industries, we need a workforce that is ready to meet the demand rapidly coming over the horizon.
“The turnout at this great event just shows the sheer demand we have – and we’ll work tooth and nail to get our talent linked up with these global firms so they can build a career at home.”
The event comes hot on the heels of the launch of the Tees Valley Industry Scholarship – a £1million training programme to provide opportunities to gain essential skills needed for the region’s rapidly expanding low-carbon energy sector.
