Mayor Joins FUJIFILM For Ground Breaking of New BioCampus

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has joined FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies (FDB) for a Groundbreaking Ceremony signalling the start of Phase 1 construction of the company’s new BioCampus at its Billingham location.

The firm, a world leading cGMP Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) supports its partners in the biopharmaceutical industry with the development and production of their biologics, vaccines and gene therapies.

Phase 1 of the BioCampus development will include the construction of a 42,000 square foot purpose built office accommodation and visitor centre, in addition to making ready the land for subsequent construction phases, expected to include additional research and development laboratories and new manufacturing facilities.

The up to £14.5million Phase 1 development is supported by the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority through grant funding of up to £3.625million.  It is expected that the new office accommodation will house approximately 328 of FDB’s existing staff and support the addition of a further 22 positions at the companies UK location to support its growing portfolio of partner programs.

“This world-class research centre right in the heart of the Tees Valley – backed with £2.65million from the Government’s Local Growth Fund – will be at the forefront of medical innovation as well as creating jobs and attracting further investment. It builds on almost £5 million of Local Growth Fund already spent in Stockton North and the further investment in the area through the Future High Streets Fund.”

The construction is expected to be completed by March 2021.
