Mayor Visits Growing Teesside-Based Firm Securing Work At Net Zero Teesside Power

A Teesside-based firm with a global reach has welcomed the Tees Valley Mayor after securing work on the transformational Net Zero Teesside Power project at Teesworks.

Sulzer Chemtech has expanded its capabilities in our region in recent years – with its state-of-the-art facility at Tees Advanced Manufacturing Park (TeesAMP), in Middlesbrough, opening in 2020.

The multinational firm supports the refining, chemical processing and power industries with cutting edge maintenance, repair, upgrade and revamp services for key equipment – such as separation units, mass transfer components and waste to energy boilers.

And, crucially, it trains up the skills of technicians on Teesside with detailed, tailored in-house courses on confined space entry, weld overlay and repair training.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen saw some of the training in action at the company’s Middlesbrough base last week.

Mayor Houchen said: “It was a real pleasure to see some of the brilliant training facilities Sulzer have to offer right here on Teesside – and it’s brilliant they’ve secured work on NZT Power to provide more well-paid jobs to local people.

“It’s also great to hear the activity the company has seen is allowing them to take on apprentices for the first time in Sulzer Chemtech’s UK history.

“Sulzer is a great example of a company both showing and backing our strengths in engineering and chemical processing – and I’m proud of the number of Teessiders they have on their books flying the flag for our region right around the globe.

“I look forward to seeing Sulzer’s work take shape on the NZT site as work ramps up at Redcar.”

Sulzer secured a major contract over the summer for the Net Zero Teesside Power project to design, manufacture, and supply critical proprietary internals for the carbon capture unit at the plant.

The landmark project is a joint venture between bp and Equinor, with work now underway at Teesworks for the project to become the world’s first gas-fired power plant featuring integrated carbon capture.

It will be capable of delivering up to 740 megawatts of low-carbon, flexible power – enough to supply over one million UK homes annually.

And the plant will capture up to two million tonnes of CO₂ per year, which will be stored offshore under the North Sea.

Sulzer is a global leader in chemical processing and separation technologies – and workers from our region travel all over the world to its global network of 180 manufacturing facilities and service centres.

Brett Armer, Head of Tower Field Service, Europe Caspian and Africa, at Sulzer Chemtech, added: “Sulzer is extremely proud to have been selected for the Net Zero Teesside Carbon Capture facility, demonstrating that our world class carbon capture technology, installation and maintenance services are market leading.

“We are growing our business, with our highly trained staff here in Teesside, and we are using these skills to develop business not only in the local area but supporting our operations globally.”
