Mayor Visits Tees Valley Conveyor Belting Firm

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has pledged his support to a Stockton-based firm which is the UK’s largest independent manufacturer of process and conveyor belting.

GB Belting was established by former ICI development engineer Gerry Byrne in January 1985. It produces customised industrial belts for sectors including food processing, materials handling, pharmaceutical and automotive, exporting its products to more than 70 countries around the world.

On his visit to the GB Belting’s Thornaby site, Mayor Houchen learned more about the company, which is now run by Gerry’s son Jeremy, and its local and national clients.

GB Belting has provided belting for household-name companies with bases in the region, including Tetley and Warburtons, and has even provided wind tunnel belts for Formula One testing.

The firm, which employs 13 people, recently took on two new members of staff and has further plans to expand its operations in the Tees Valley.

Mayor Houchen said: “GB Belting’s 33-year history in the region is testament to the confidence firms have in the region, and their ability, big or small, to make a success of themselves.

“Its client list reads like a Who’s Who of top businesses that are clearly pleased with its products, and there is barely an area in the world it does not export to. Much like the Tees Valley itself, GB Belting punches above its weight. I’ve pledged to do whatever it takes to help them get on and can’t wait to hear about their next success.”

David Smith, Sales Manager at GB Belting, said: “We were delighted to host the Mayor and show him first-hand what we offer the world, and what we have to offer the area we call home.

“Our discussions were very encouraging as we look to become bigger and better.”
