New Support To Help Our Cultural Hotspots Boost Visitor Numbers

Our region’s cultural attractions and visitor hotspots are being offered dedicated support to improve their accessibility and get more people through their doors – with funding of up to £10,000 now available.

“Unlocking Access” is a new programme from the Tees Valley Combined Authority to help our brilliant venues boost their visitor numbers, audiences and their takings by making them more welcoming and accessible to all visitors.

Eligible venues will be able to access staff and volunteer training on accessibility, scoping visits to identify opportunities for improvement, and full accessibility audits offering detailed recommendations.

Venues can apply for grant funding to make improvements – with awards for successful applicants between £500 and £10,000.

The new scheme is open to museums, galleries, theatres, music venues and visitor attractions – and aims to improve visitor experiences for those with disabilities, open up venues to attract new audiences to boost spending, and create more inclusive workplaces.

Data from Visit Britain shows the value of the “Purple Pound” is significant.

Total expenditure on tourism trips in England by those with an impairment, or those travelling within a group where a member has an impairment, is estimated to be £14.6bn annually.

Examples of improvements Unlocking Access could support include minor capital works on buildings, such as widening doorways, improving signage, upgrading bathroom facilities, as well as purchasing equipment, including ramps, sensory packs, hearing loops for venues.

Support is also available for improving digital assets, pre-visit information, and making websites more accessible and WCAG compliant.

Cllr Brenda Harrison, Combined Authority Cabinet Lead for Creative Place, said: “Accessibility should never be an afterthought – it’s central to ensuring that everyone can experience and enjoy what our fantastic cultural and visitor attractions have to offer.

“This programme will give venues the tools, knowledge and funding they need to make meaningful changes, creating more inclusive spaces for residents, staff and visitors.

Support is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and by Tees Valley Combined Authority through the Creative & Visitor Economy Growth Programme.

Applications are now open and must be submitted by 12pm, Monday, 6 October 2025. Successful applicants will be notified by 17 October 2025.
