Some of the best cyclists on the planet will race through our region’s streets once again this summer – with another dramatic finish in prospect.
The Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Women will come to Tees Valley on Friday, 6 June, with second stage of the UCI Women’s WorldTour race held entirely within the region
It will begin on the historic Hartlepool Marina before building to a grandstand finish with a gruelling uphill sprint up Saltburn Bank.
The Friday stage will see riders leave Hartlepool’s waterfront – close to the National Museum of the Royal Navy – before heading inland and then east, tackling the punishing 15% hairpins of Saltburn Bank twice, with the second ascent forming the finish line for what promises to be a thrilling spectacle.
And if last year’s scenes are anything to go by, cycling fans are in for a treat. Thousands lined the roadsides in Redcar in September as Stevie Williams powered to victory in the men’s edition of the race, on his way to sealing the overall Tour of Britain title.
Meanwhile, the opening stage on Thursday, 5 June, starts in Dalby Forest in the North York Moors National Park and finishes in Redcar.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “We are delighted to be bringing another major cycling event to our region, which promises to be two days of brilliant bike racing across our fantastic and challenging local routes.
“The Tour of Britain Women will further boost our region’s reputation as a fantastic cycling destination and will again show off the best of Teesside and Hartlepool to a huge audience, attracting visitors and supporting our superb local businesses.”
Cllr Brenda Harrison, Leader of Hartlepool Borough Council, said the town was proud to play its part.
She added: “We are absolutely thrilled that Hartlepool has been chosen as the starting point for stage two of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Women.
Last year’s National Cycling Championships start of stage
“We are proud to be hosting this world-class event, and we look forward to extending a warm welcome to all the riders and their teams. I would encourage people to show their support by turning out in force to cheer on the riders as they depart Hartlepool Marina and head off across the Tees Valley.”
Cllr Carrie Richardson, Cabinet Member for Climate and Culture at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, said: “Redcar and Cleveland has a proud track record of hosting major cycling events having previously hosted the men’s Tour of Britain last year as well as the National Road Championships, National Road Series and Tour Series.
“I am thrilled that the Lloyds Tour of Britain Women will be taking place in our area in June and look forward to it providing the perfect opportunity to showcase what the area has to offer.”
The hosting of stage two is part of a wider ongoing partnership between British Cycling and the Combined Authority to grow cycling and tourism in the area – and build on the success of past events.
Jonathan Day, Managing Director of British Cycling Events, said: “We have first visits for the race to Dalby Forest and the North York Moors National Park, from where we will race through North Yorkshire and into the Tees Valley to visit Redcar, Hartlepool, and Saltburn.
“We know Redcar and Saltburn well as past men’s Tour of Britain and national championships venues, and I am sure Saltburn Bank as a stage finish will prove very popular with fans.”
Stage two is the second of four stages in the 2025 Lloyds Tour of Britain Women, with the race starting in Dalby Forest on 5 June before heading north into Scotland for the final two stages.
Full route details and timings are set to be announced in the coming weeks.
