A popular programme is seeking more local firms to boost their productivity, improve efficiency and unlock growth through digital technology.
Backed by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, the Made Smarter programme offers hands-on support, specialist training and grant funding to help businesses take the next step in their digital journey.
Sawdust CIC, a fabrication studio based in Middlesbrough, has secured new equipment to save time and money through the programme.
Its creative fabrication workshop provides affordable access to the equipment, space and technical knowledge artists need to produce work locally.
The company bought a laser-cutter to help the firm cut waste – as well as a new laptop and a 3D printer.
Founding Director Will Hughes said: “These pieces of equipment really save us time. Speeding up our workflow means we can go from job to job much quicker and make more money.”
Sawdust celebrated its first birthday last month and is now looking to raise £1,000 from donations to support its community work.
With guidance from the Made Smarter sessions since formation, workflow at the company has also improved.
Will added: “We were surprised at the breadth and depth of businesses we met at our first event.
“We wondered if it was for us, given that we are a quite creative organisation.
“But there was a bakery there, and an artisan maker, so we felt at home on that programme.
“I would recommend Made Smarter because it definitely helps you think about where you need to go as an organisation to build your skills in what you do next.”
The programme includes fully funded workshops, one-to-one expert support and grants of up to £3,500 for technical advice, with capital grants of up to £20,000 available to help firms invest in new digital equipment and software.
Businesses taking part can also get tailored guidance to develop a digital roadmap, whether they are taking their first steps with new technology or looking to build on systems they already use.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Investing in the right technology can help our businesses save time, cut costs and win more work.
“Made Smarter gives local firms practical support, expert advice and crucial funding to make their businesses fit for the future.
“I’d urge any small or medium-sized manufacturer looking to grow to sign up.”
Made Smarter is delivered in the North East by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority and Tees Valley Combined Authority.
Sessions will take place on 16 September and 23 September 2026.
Places can be booked here.
