Work Gets Under Way On Teesside Airport’s New Duty-Free Store

Teesside International Airport | Published on: 13th August 2021

Work to create Teesside International’s new duty-free shop has today (13 August) begun, as the airport completes the final part of its multimillion-pound terminal transformation.

The new store will be operated by World Duty Free which has signed a 12-year deal with the airport, offering perfume & cosmetics, confectionery, luxury goods and a range of other duty-free favourites such as liquor items to passengers.

Darlington-based Wharton Construction, which carried out work on the airport’s Goosepool Bar and shop, has been chosen to lead the work. It will be supported by the town’s Powercare Electrical Services, which also was part of the redevelopment of the terminal, and Middlesbrough’s RTS Joinery, which will supply fixtures and fittings.

Construction on the 1,860sq ft space is expected to take six weeks. When complete in September, it will join outlets such as boutique House of Zana and Rejoy and News Essentials which are already operating at the airport.

The news came just days after the last route in Ryanair’s summer 2021 schedule, to Corfu, got up and running and following the announcement that TUI, the UK’s biggest holiday firm, will be flying to Antalya in Turkey as well as Majorca when it returns to the airport next year.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Any airport worth its salt has a fantastic duty-free shop and in a matter of weeks Teesside Airport will once more be able to offer passengers some great products and deals after an eight-year absence.

“We’ve again signed up some brilliant local businesses that have a strong track record with the airport to help deliver this latest development, keeping the money we spend in our region and putting it back in the pockets of local people from across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.

“As we continue to grow our routes, with 15 popular services announced since we brought the airport back into public control and with an even brighter and better 2022 to look forward to, our partnership with World Duty Free will prove another real asset to our airport.”
