Young People Fire Up Their Futures With Trailblazer Training

Young Teessiders have told how taking part in a fire training programme has helped boost their confidence and their job prospects.

The group of 18 to 21-year-olds took part in a week-long course which included training on hose handling, problem solving, working at height, fire behaviour, and first aid.

The training programme was delivered as part of the £5million Tees Valley Youth Guarantee Trailblazer.

Launched earlier this year, the Trailblazer is funded by the UK Government and offers high-quality paid work placements and non-paid work taster sessions for young people aged 18 to 21 across the region who are currently not in work, education or training, helping them to build experience, confidence, and a pathway into lasting employment.

Each participant on the fire training course received a nationally recognised qualification to help them into work in return for their involvement in the taster session at Middlesbrough Community Fire Station.

The course concluded with an impressive practical demonstration and a formal passing out ceremony, overseen by Cleveland Fire Brigade Area Manager David Preston, who praised the group’s teamwork and professionalism.

For 18-year-old Luke Johns, the course proved to be a real confidence boost.

He said: “I went to Outwood Academy and then Prior Pursglove College for two years. Sadly, I didn’t get the grades but that’s one of the reasons that this is a good opportunity.

“I applied to do it because I wanted to find a job, like every other person here. It’s been decent, especially coming to the Fire Station and doing loads of new tasks, learning new skills like teamwork, and being professional.

“My confidence has gone up, and I’ve also met some new friends, so it’s been a good experience.”

Georgia Martin, 18, from Redcar, enjoyed the experience.

The former Sacred Heart and Redcar College student said: “I studied sport at college, and through this scheme I’ve had the opportunity to find what jobs were available on placement and actually try them.

“It’s a good opportunity to get more options for what I’d like to do in future, and I’ve done things I didn’t think I would be able to do.”

Mick Jones, Youth Development Manager at Cleveland Fire Brigade, said: “The Trailblazer programme started two weeks ago – and the work we’ve done with them will stand them in good stead for the placements that many of them have been offered. It has given them hands-on experience.

“As a programme, the Trailblazer is – in the years I’ve been doing this type of work with the fire service – incredibly unique.

“It must be one of the best programmes, at this moment in time, out there for young people to find a good opportunity to move into work.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “This is exactly what the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer is all about – giving young people real opportunities to build their confidence, learn new skills and take that next step into the world of work.

“Seeing these trainees working alongside Cleveland Fire Brigade and gaining a nationally recognised qualification shows how practical experience can transform futures.

“We’re backing our young people with the support and opportunities they deserve, helping them find careers they can be proud of right here in Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.”

Councillor Lisa Evans, Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and TVCA Cabinet Member for Education, Employment, and Skills, added: “This is a good example of what can happen when local partners work together to back our young people.

“By giving them practical skills, real-world experience and qualifications, we’re helping them take that next step into lasting employment, and it’s great to see Cleveland Fire Brigade on board.

“I’m passionate about continuing to create these pathways – because every young person deserves the chance to thrive here in Tees Valley.”
