Kirkleatham Estate Infrastructure, Walled Garden & Catering Academy

The Kirkleatham Estate in Redcar & Cleveland is one of the region’s most significant heritage assets comprising a wealth of greenspace and impressive buildings and structures – 24 of which are listed in recognition of their national importance.

It currently houses an increasingly popular museum with nearby pavilion and play area, which now attract in excess of 100,000 visitors per year. The potential of the showground, walled garden, stables and other land and property across the site offer a major opportunity to complement these existing assets and make the estate a major regional visitor attraction.

The first phase of the project has the following aims:

  • Kirkleatham Walled Garden will become a commercially-operated, cultural attraction, training and events facility. It will encompass the catering and horticultural academy;
  • The nearby former Kirkleatham Nurseries site will be developed into a multi-use training site, although focusing primarily on horticulture and land-based and practical skills, managed by Redcar & Cleveland Council; and
  • To provide the infrastructure to unlock the wider development of the site, including a new access road from the A174 and a car park.

The Walled Garden will be a regional attraction and first major development of the Estate. Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council also secured funding from the Coastal Communities Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
