Billingham Train Station Improved Access

Billingham station is an important transport hub for Tees Valley. It is located on the Middlesbrough to Newcastle, Durham Coast Line. This project’s purpose was to provide an accessible route to the platforms.

The Department for Transport (DfT) define an accessible route as one that:

  • Is navigable using a manually self-propelled wheelchair;
  • Ideally, no longer than 400m from the station entrance to platforms; and
  • Satisfies applicable ‘DfT Design Standards for Accessible Railway Stations’ (version 04, 20 March 2015), except where prior dispensations have been agreed.

Steps from the footbridge were the only platform access. This project has resolved this by providing step free access. The new footbridge and lift to the platforms make the station fully accessible for all users. An improved car park and landscaping were also delivered.
