Take control of Tees Valley – Residents urged ahead of crucial mayoral vote

With exactly two months to go until Tees Valley goes to the polls, residents are being urged to take control of their area’s future and vote for the new role of Tees Valley Mayor.

The #TeesTakesControl campaign has today been launched by the Tees Valley Combined Authority to inspire voters into participating in the game changing election in two months on May 4.

Residents of Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees can decide who they want to lead the Combined Authority’s charge to improve the economy of the area.

Andrew Lewis, Managing Director of the Tees Valley Combined Authority, called on residents to seize a unique opportunity to influence the future of their region and local communities.

He said: “The new Tees Valley Mayor will have powers to decide on issues that impact our daily lives – including opportunities for young people; our road, rail and bus services; and bringing new jobs and investment into our area.

“It’s important everyone’s voice is heard. This is a new opportunity to elect someone who is accountable locally, for decisions previously taken by politicians and civil servants in Whitehall and Westminster.

“We are encouraging every eligible person to register to vote, find out more about the candidates, and be sure your vote is counted on May 4.”

The Mayor will work with the five existing Councils, to drive forward the economic growth of the area as a whole.

The decision to create the role of Tees Valley Mayor has unlocked new funding and responsibilities to be exercised in the Tees Valley, for the people of the Tees Valley.

It means decisions about transport, skills and education, homes, cultural facilities, attracting inward investment and encouraging business growth, can be made locally, rather than in London.
