No, it’s not the end product of one too many selection boxes – Twixmas, or Twixtmas, actually refers to the time between Christmas Day and New Year.
While some are content to continue the eating, drinking and being merry, others are keen to use the time to break the boredom and get out of the house.
Here are some ideas to help you explore our region and during the in-between days…
If you’re heading to Middlesbrough for the Boxing Day sales, why not take some time out to go on the Snowman trail. The town’s beloved sculptures are back for another year, and you can find a trail sheet at the town’s Holiday Inn Express and MIMA. Find the 12 beautifully decorated statues, then visit the Holiday inn for 50% off hot drinks.
After that, spend some time in one of the town’s terrific parks such as Stewart Park or Albert Park
In Darlington, Hopetown’s Enchanted Forest Reindeer Trail – running until 31 December – you can take a wonderous woodland walk at the region’s latest attraction, solving clues to track down Santa’s reindeer. Entry to the museum is free, but the event is £5 per child.
If you want to go further afield, the borough is full of fantastic walks. Broken Scar is a popular walking route for dog walkers and families all year round. The stunning trail through woodland and along the course of the Tees follows the route of the Teesdale Way and is perfect for a short morning or afternoon stroll.
If you’re feeling brave on Boxing Day, you could take on the popular, annual Redcar Boxing Day Dip. Registration is now open for the event, which will certainly blow the cobwebs away as hundreds raise charity for their chosen cause by making a splash in the sea.
If you’d rather wrap up warm when you hit the beach, try the coastal walk from Redcar to Saltburn, which runs for around four miles along a beautiful stretch of beach. And while in Saltburn, why not pick up some delicious fish and chips and explore the pier?
If your little ones are restless, treat them to all the fun of a pantomime, with Aladdin and the Hartlepool Monkey running until Sunday, 29 December. Taking place at the Town Hall Theatre, all of the Hartlepool panto favourites return for a thrilling adventure of love and friendship.
Speaking of Love, The Way of Love is one of the Northern Saints’ Trails. You can take in part of it leaving from the historic Church of St Hilda on Hartlepool Headland along the England Coast Path to Hart Station.
Broadway smash Six is coming to Stockton’s Globe on 17 December – and running right across the Christmas period. Meet the six wives of Henry VIII as they hit the microphones to tell their tales in a show that has scooped more than 35 international awards.
In Stockton, there are lots of short walks in beautiful villages and countryside to discover. Explore Honey Pot Wood and try to spot deer on the outskirts of Whitton. If it’s not too cold, stroll through Newham Grange Park to experience the beautiful greenery and kids’ playpark. Or have a slow amble along Norton High Street and discover its heritage trail.
