Wrap Up for Some Wonderful Winter Walks

Blog | Published on: 17th December 2024

Though the weather outside is frightful, Tees Valley is so delightful. So here’s some places to go; let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Head out into the crisp air to break up the post-Christmas lull with these ideas for some of the region’s top walking spots.

Guisborough Forest

Guisborough Forest & Walkway Visitors Centre provides the ideal starting point for a visit to Guisborough Forest. The walk extends for 2.5miles along part of the route followed by the old Guisborough Branch Railway line. As well as walking and cycling trails, there’s a play area for younger kids, a sculpture trail and plenty of picture-perfect places for a picnic.

The Way of St. Hild

Beginning at Hartlepool’s St Hilda’s Church on the town’s Headland, this route which runs a full 47 miles to Whitby is a heritage pilgrimage trail like no other. We don’t suggest you try it all in one day – you’d barely make it – but the waypoints across the Tees Valley cover Seaton Carew, Greatham Creek, the Transporter Bridge, Saltburn and Skinningrove, making portions of the walk convenient wherever you are.

Teesdale Way

The Teesdale Way is another long-distance walking route which stretches from Cumbria’s North Pennines, extending through Stockton, Middlesbrough, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Darlington and Yarm. The route rarely strays from the river Tees and can be walked in either direction, promising historic towns, Christmas Card villages and stunning views.

Preston Park

For something a little more contained but still vast, visit Preston Park’s 100-acre grounds and discover their river and woodland walkways – an ideal place to unwind. There’s an adventure playground for the kids, and in better weather you can explore their walled garden – but maybe that’s one for spring. And if the weather gets too bad, pop into the Museum which boasts a treasure trove of local history.

Fairy Dell

Fairy Dell in Middlesbrough provides the ideal spot to while away an hour or so in the great outdoors. Fairy Dell is a tranquil haven for wildlife with steeply wooded banks, becks, lakes, woodland and grassy glades. Follow the carved statute trail or take some time to enjoy winter bird-spotting.

Roseberry Topping

If you’re feeling really adventurous – and surprisingly fit after being stuffed with turkey – take a hike up Roseberry Topping. There, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the winter landscape across Cleveland and North Yorkshire. The walk up the iconic Tees Valley landmark is also dog-friendly, so there’s no excuse to not get out there and explore.
