Free oral history training opportunity – Become a heritage interviewer.

As part of Periplum’s Tees Valley Trailblazers heritage project, we’re now offering free Oral History training, with the opportunity to become a heritage interviewer.

The initial training will take place at Kirkleatham Museum, Redcar, on the weekend of the 15-16th February. You can choose one of these four options for your first session:

Saturday 15th February – 10am-12pm OR 1-3pm

OR

Sunday 16th February – 10am-12pm OR 1-3pm

There will be a follow-up training session available on either 22nd or 23rd February.

The training will include:

  • Interview techniques and Oral History best practice
  • Training in how to use an audio recorder, provided by us
  • Support towards carrying out your own interview with someone you identify as a local ‘Trailblazer’. This can be anyone you think is inspiring. Examples could include a sports person, a charity worker, someone who makes a big difference in your community, or even an inspiring person in your own family. There is a small financial contribution available towards your travel costs and you will be supported through the interview process by one of Periplum’s team. Your interview will become part of a podcast, which will be made available online at the end of the project.

If you’re interested in this opportunity, please get back to us with your choice of timings for the first session next weekend and we’ll provide you with further information. Please contact: [email protected]

About Periplum / Trailblazers

Periplum (www.periplum.co.uk) is one of the UK’s leading outdoor arts companies, specialising in heritage and location-based projects, as well as touring productions internationally. The company has previously created 2 major Tees Valley-wide projects: The Glass Ceiling (2018), celebrating local suffragists and suffragettes to mark 100 years since the first women’s vote; Homecoming (2014), commemorating 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. In 2024, the company created North Sea Sirens, an audio walking tour in East Cleveland, and The Spiral Shore, a large-scale fire installation on Saltburn beach.

The Trailblazers heritage project focuses on Tees women both past and present who’ve broken new ground as innovators, activists, workers and adventurers. The project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Tees Valley Museums.
