Land of Iron

Explore this completely new state of the art attraction, featuring artefacts and stories from the people that powered the Iron Valley. Journey back to a different time with the aid of photographs, mementos and objects that tell a fascinating story of the life and work of the miners and their families. The exhibition is interactive and designed with every age in mind watch out for the mine’s ambulance cart and what gruesome discoveries you might find in there!

We recommend allowing 1 hour to experience the exhibition either before or after the guided tour.

Our knowledgeable and experienced guides will take you on a journey sharing with you historical tales and artefacts. Discover how the miners were paid, what equipment they carried into the black tunnels, and find out to what terrifying use they put papier-mâché…

Prepare to be plunged into total darkness as you listen to the story of twelve-year-old Fred and his memories of his first day underground as a “trappy lad.

We cater for all visitors regardless of disability or special needs and we do our best to ensure that their experience is as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.

The museum has a separate, signposted, disabled car park at the rear and the museum is wheelchair accessible throughout.

Road Directions

Land of Iron lies in the centre of Skinningrove Valley in the North East of England. Skinningrove is 15 miles (24km) along the coast from Middlesbrough and equally from Whitby. Skinningrove is well serviced by Bus and lies on the picturesque Cleveland Way. By Car Follow the brown signs to the museum. On the A174 between Loftus and Carlin Howe turn into Skinningrove; turn right after the narrow bridge. The museum has ample free parking, disabled parking is to the rear.

Public Transport Directions

By Train The nearest train station is in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, from Saltburn trains travel half-hourly to Darlington which connects to the East Coast Mainline. The Arriva X4 bus runs half-hourly between Saltburn and Loftus or Whitby. By Bus Running between Middlesbrough, Redcar, Saltburn, Brotton, Skinningrove Lane End, Loftus and Whitby, the Arriva X4 is half-hourly and stops on the A174, at the end of Mill Lane. Walk down Mill Lane, towards Skinningrove; turn right after the bridge. Running between Middlesbrough, Nunthorpe, Guisborough, Skelton, Brotton, Skinningrove, Loftus and Easington, the Arriva X5 is hourly and stops outside the Museum.
