Tees Barrage – Canoeing and Kayaking

Tees Barrage International White Water Centre is ideal for all kayaking and canoeing enthusiasts, from beginners to pros. Want to practice and develop your paddling skills? With a range of water conditions available all year round in any weather; the barrage offers a safe and exciting environment for you to learn, improve and enjoy.
WHAT’S THERE FOR KAYAKERS AND CANOEISTS?
At Tees Barrage, there’s a real sense of camaraderie. There is a fun, friendly and enthusiastic community of regular paddlers. The excellent facilities for kayaking and canoeing include a flat warm-up lake and a world-standard white water course. This means you can try your paddling technique on different water conditions every time you visit!
If you want to try canoeing or kayaking for the first time, paddlesport courses led by a fully-qualified instructor are on offer from beginner to three-star.  The instructor will work with you to improve your skills, encourage your development and boost your confidence on the water.
FLAT WATER LAKE AND LAUNCH AREA
Great for beginners, this is a large body of calm water set into the bank of the River Tees. Head here if you want to practice your paddling, learn how to capsize and recover, or just fancy a warm-up before tackling the white water section!
Our flatwater lake is used by: people enrolled on a water course, paddlers heading down the white water courses, and those launching up river. If you want to paddle on our lake, you must have basic skills and have completed a capsize. Make sure your boat is in good form (with airbags) and wear the appropriate safety equipment at all times. And remember, there’s no swimming here and launches are up river only.
300-METRE WHITE WATER COURSE (JUBILEE COURSE)
The 300-metre course is designed for inflatable rafts, canoes and kayaks. So, there’s plenty of flexibility depending on your preference. Featuring turns, twists and several big drops, this course is ideal for thrill seekers and is a great way to put your paddling skills to the test! With an updated main channel and a new secondary channel, you get plenty of waves and holes for you to throw the best moves!
100-METRE SHORT WHITE WATER COURSE (DIAMOND COURSE)
There is also a shorter white water course. This features the biggest artificial white water drop in the UK as well as many twists and turns along its 3.7-metre descent. A perfect setting for paddlers looking for an exhilarating experience they won’t forget!
(To use our white water courses, you must have a three-star standard qualification and capable of rolling on white water).
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO KAYAK AND CANOE AT TEES BARRAGE?
All you need to do is complete the booking forms. These include ‘Paddler Medical Consent’ and ‘White Water Health & Safety and Risk Declaration’ forms that you need to fill out too.
Simply download the documents, fill them in, and then either hand them in when you arrive at reception or send them in advance. Please note: a parent or guardian must sign both forms if you’re under 18.
