The Cleveland Way Walking Route Saltburn to Sandsend

Distance: 17.5 miles (28 Km)

Start Saltburn TS12 1EH

Finish Sandsend YO21 3SZ

Explore why Saltburn is popular with Victorians, the Cleveland Way and its art features, the highest cliff on the eastern coast of England and the Boulby Potash mine, Staithes’ narrow alleyways, pubs and cafes, and Kettleness’ reminder of coastal erosion, all on the North Yorkshire coastline. Saltburn is a great place to start, with its pier frequently adorned by Yarnbombers and its popularity as a surfing destination. From there, the Cleveland Way heads south, rising quickly onto the cliff top. Along this stretch, you’ll find several artistic metal sculptures, the most distinctive being a circular shape with ten metal objects representative of the area dangling in the breeze.

Further along is Boulby Cliff, the highest cliff on the eastern coast of England at 203 metres (666 feet), and the Boulby Potash mine, the deepest mine in Europe. After Boulby, you’ll drop down to Staithes, a picturesque harbour village with pubs, cafes and accommodation should you wish to stay the night. Then continue on to Runswick Bay and its beach, and the original village of Kettleness, which slipped into the sea in 1829. Finally, you’ll reach Sandsend, with its wealth of tea
