Tour of Britain 2024 - Darlington

Darlington is the starting location for the the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain 2024, which takes place on Wednesday 4th September.

Riders will face a tricky, technical circuit through the town’s tree-lined suburbs and town centre streets before heading out of town down the A67 via Teesside International Airport towards Yarm.

The races promise to deliver exhilarating top-class cycling in Darlington town centre with the chance to cheer on the UK’s best riders.

How to get there

Public Transport

  • Train – Darlington and North Road train stations are a short distance away from the route. Regular direct trains services into Darlington run to/from Redcar, Middlesbrough, Thornaby, Yarm and Eaglescliffe. For further information please visit the National Rail website. Book direct with Northern.
  • Bus – Buses will be routed away from the town centre loop during the event.

Road

Please ensure you follow the road diversions along the route to allow you get to get the car parks.

Multi storey Feethams cark park with 650 spaces including 33 blue badge spaces and 10 electric charging points. £1 per hour.

Spectator Safety Information

For your safety and to assist your enjoyment please:

• Remember the races progresses at a fast pace, please don’t stand in the road even to get a photograph;

• Don’t cross the road once the lead car has passed; the race will be coming at speed;

• Arrive early, the race can go quicker or slower than planned. If you can’t get to a start or finish location, check out other key climbs or points of interest on route.

• Plan your journey in advance some bus services may be suspended or delayed so check with travel operators;

• Don’t park on the roadside on the racecourse, find a safe off-road position;

• Listen to the Marshalls, their advice is your safety;

• Support local businesses

• And lastly watch the race, wave those flags! Smile: you may be on TV!

The race starts under the sister bells of Big Ben in the town centre along historic High Row, the perfect centre point for exploring. If you’re hungry, check out one of Darlington’s many cafes or restaurants nestled in the yards and wynds or head to Houndgate and Blackwell gate for hidden gems such as Babul’s, Saltfish and Sortie. 
 
If shopping’s your thing, Binns department store stocks designer brands such as Barbour, All Saints, Mulberry and Tommy Hilfiger. Head along to Grange Road for luxury homeware stores, chilled cafe bars and clothing and gift boutiques! Nestled along Skinnergate and the yards and wynds you’ll find numerous independent stores. If you’re after well known names, head to Northgate where as well as exploring the high street, you’ll be able to wander through the Cornmill and Queen Street Shopping Centres. 
 
Once you’ve caught the start of the race, take a walk up to Hopetown – Darlington’s newest visitor attraction where you’ll be able to learn about how Darlington changed the world forever by laying the foundations for the first ever passenger steam railway. You can also catch the train from Northgate Station through to the race finish in Redcar using the Bishop Line from Hopetown. 
 
Extend your stay with a trip to a show at the Hippodrome or Majestic Theatre, or hear live music at the Forum Music Centre. Explore the Tees Cottage Pumping Station or see the Piercebridge Roman Bridge. Take a step into nature in one of our many parks, including Green Flag-awarded South Park and West Park, or meander the banks of the River Skerne with a walk at Broken Scar.

Free Bike Storage: Ride to the event and leave your bike in our sheltered, lockable parking shed located on Town Hall Plaza. Simply turn up, drop off your bike, and pick it up at any point until 5pm. No need to worry about finding a parking spot – just relax and enjoy the race!
