Trailblazers – an exhibition by Periplum

Visit Periplum’s Trailblazer carriage at Kirkleatham Museum this February. A 19th century Brougham carriage has been lovingly restored to provide an interactive experience for visitors, with film and images of the local area. Take your seat inside and let your imagination go on a journey through the landscapes of Redcar & Cleveland in search of Tees trailblazers.

The exhibition runs through to the 22nd February (Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 – 3:30), and launches Periplum’s Trailblazers heritage project, celebrating local women who’ve broken new ground as innovators, activists, workers and adventurers. It features original music, poetry, photographs and Visual Vernacular performance on film shot in local landscapes, focusing on contemporary women.

About Periplum

Periplum (www.periplum.co.uk) is one of the UK’s leading outdoor arts companies, specialising in heritage and location-based
projects, as well as touring productions internationally. The company has previously created two major Tees Valley-wide projects. The Glass Ceiling (2018) celebrated local suffragists and suffragettes to mark 100 years since the first women’s
vote. Homecoming (2014) commemorated 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. In 2024, the company created North Sea Sirens, an audio walking tour in East Cleveland, and The Spiral Shore, a large-scale fire installation on Saltburn beach.
