Advanced manufacturing is the use of innovative technology to improve products and processes.

It can include industries such as aerospace, medical, pharmaceutical, robotics and automation, food, drink, printing textiles. Examples of job titles include Production Managers and Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Welders, Platers and Fabricators.

Tees Valley is a global leader in advanced manufacturing and engineering, home to multinational businesses operating in manufacturing, engineering and process industries.

KP Snacks, one of the biggest British snack manufacturers, makes all of its iconic McCoy’s crisps from its facility in Billingham. Tees Valley is also home to the Tetley brand, which produces more than a billion tea bags each month, and global food giant, Quorn, which manufactures all of its products in Tees Valley.

There are currently 3,100 businesses employing 19,000 people, accounting for 7.4% of jobs in Tees Valley. The sector is worth £3.8billion.

Chemical Processing is the conversion of raw materials (natural gas, air, water, metals and minerals) into more than 70,000 different products.

Tees Valley is a global leader for the chemical and process industry, producing some 30% of the UK’s chemical output.

The region is home to some of the world’s biggest chemical manufacturers, including SABIC UK, BOC Linde, Lotte Chemicals, Venator, Lucite International, Huntsman Polyurethanes, and CF Industries.
More than 1,400 companies in Tees Valley are directly involved in the chemicals and process industry and the sector exports £12billion of product, contributing £2.5billion a year to the local economy.

Creative & Visitor Economy

Working in the creative and cultural industries includes roles in areas such as crafts, art and design, TV and radio, music, theatre, drama, media and advertising, galleries, museums and libraries, sport and fitness, food and hospitality.

Tees Valley is home to internationally recognised cultural and creative organisations, including ARC, Theatre Hullabaloo, MIMA, SIRF and Festival of Thrift.

The Northern Studios in Hartlepool is the only large-scale film & television studio complex in North East England and the BBC has committed to a £25million investment to help fund TV production and talent development across the North East.

Tees Valley’s tourism economy is on the rise with more than 12,000 people now in jobs supported by the sector. The region welcomed 19.4million visitors in 2023 providing a £1.3billion impact to the local economy.

Middlesbrough’s Boho Zone is the digital, creative and business hub of the Tees Valley. Its home to a dynamic range of businesses, including Double Eleven, Animmersion, and Behaviour UK North.

There are 630 digital businesses in Tees Valley, employing around 8,000 people. Employment locally in the sector has gone up by 60% in the past five years, well above the national average.

Energy & Low Carbon

The go-to location for green energy schemes, Tees Valley is emerging as an energy powerhouse as we lead the way in building a greener economy.

SeAH Wind Ltd has started construction of its £900million offshore wind monopile manufacturing facility at Teesworks.

Net Zero Teesside aims to deliver the UK’s first zero-carbon industrial cluster, capturing the same amount of energy annually as more than three million homes.

Teesside is also home to a number of pioneering clean energy projects. bp is developing the UK’s largest blue hydrogen production facility, H2Teesside, alongside another green hydrogen facility, HyGreen Teesside.

The sector accounts for a relatively high number of Tees Valley jobs compared to nationally at 11% above the UK average in 2021.

Darlington Economic Campus (DEC)

The region is also now home to the Darlington Economic Campus. Announced in March 2021, major Government departments such as the Treasury have moved 1,000 jobs to Darlington.

Teesside International Airport

Teesside International Airport and Business Park continues to develop and expand. It has recently had the highest passenger numbers since 2009 and has a new £2.5million state-of-the-art cargo handling facility.

FedEx has recently announced it is relocating its cargo operation from Newcastle Airport to Teesside and there are many other businesses located at the site such as Willis Aviation, TNT, and Airbourne Colours.

Teesworks

Teesworks, the site of the former Redcar Steelworks, is the largest and most connected industrial zone in the UK and is expected to create up to 20,000 jobs

SeAH Wind Ltd has started construction of its £900million offshore wind monopile manufacturing facility at Teesworks. It will be the biggest of its kind in the world and will create 750 permanent jobs.

bp has chosen the site for its low carbon projects and are leading the way in Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage and Hydrogen production right here.
