Net Zero Teesside

In the UK’s race to Net Zero it must decarbonise industry to achieve its target of net zero emissions by 2050.

The East Coast Cluster is a cluster of industrial, power and hydrogen businesses aiming to decarbonise their operations using carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) in the North Sea.

The cluster is a collaboration between Net Zero Teesside, the Northern Endurance Partnership, and Zero Carbon Humber, and stands ready to remove almost 50% of the UK’s total industrial cluster emissions.

A diverse mix of low-carbon projects are now being taken forward, including industrial carbon capture, low-carbon hydrogen production, negative emissions power, and power with carbon capture.

From 2030, at least 20 million tonnes of CO2 each year will be transported to safe, secure offshore storage – equivalent to the emissions associated with the annual energy use of around six million homes in the UK.

The East Coast Cluster represents the UK’s biggest opportunity to:

• Decarbonise industry: transporting and storing almost 50% of the UK’s total industrial cluster emissions.
• Support levelling-up: ensuring an average of 25,000 jobs per year to 2050 across Teesside and the Humber and underpinning new low carbon industries in the north of England.
• Deliver world-leading projects: creating millions of tonnes of negative emissions, removing carbon from the atmosphere, and supporting hard-to-decarbonise industries.
• Kick-start a hydrogen economy: supporting the creation of low-carbon hydrogen projects to deliver 70% of the UK’s hydrogen target for 2030.
• Demonstrate global leadership: establishing Teesside and the Humber as a globally competitive climate-friendly hub for industry and innovation, creating international momentum towards net zero.
• The collaboration will ensure the UK’s leadership in energy transition and the emerging global low-carbon and hydrogen market and play a major role in levelling up across the country.

It’s also set to create over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs each year, peaking at around 41,000 jobs in 2026.
