Big Boost For Maths Help as Multiply Scheme Success Sees Expansion

A free scheme to make maths more manageable has received a New Year boost – with support now open to more people.

The Multiply programme is available to those aged 19 and older who want to build on their maths knowledge.

Originally, the scheme was available to those who hadn’t reached a GCSE maths grade of C – or the equivalent qualification.

But now the programme has been expanded to those who do hold a C Grade – meaning thousands more people can take on courses to boost their knowledge and open the door to new employment opportunities.

Michelle (pictured) took her first step back into building her maths skills by joining Stockton Borough Council Learning & Skills Crafty Maths course – offering a fun, refreshing and creative approach to learning.

She said: “It was a way for me to feel more confident with maths while still having fun at the same time!”

After completing the course, she had both the confidence and support to progress onto an Entry Level Maths Functional Skills qualification – helping her develop her skills and get a new position.

Michelle added: “I was able to secure a new job as during my interview as they asked me maths-based questions that had just been covered in our previous class.”

The initiative, launched in 2022, has seen more than 2,000 people in the region benefit.

The courses, which can be accessed in person and online include part-time, evening classes and flexible classes to suit any lifestyle.

Multiply is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by a range of organisations – including local colleges, training providers and Local Authorities in partnership with local Voluntary and Community Sector Organisations – on behalf of the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “The success of Multiply has been great to see and it goes to show it really is never too late to gain the skills you need to get on in your career. We all know people who “don’t do maths” – but the courses Multiply offers can give you a leg up, a refresher, or can even start you from scratch.

“Thousands of people have already made the most of it and it’s another big boost to see the scheme opened up to many more.

“We’re already making great strides in ensuring no one gets left behind and making sure everyone has the confidence to secure the well-paid jobs we’re helping to create across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.”
