Call For Views on Key Document to Reshape Middlesbrough’s Centre

Views are now being sought on one of the key documents that will help shape the regeneration of Middlesbrough’s centre.

The Middlesbrough Mayoral Development Corporation has been set up to spearhead and accelerate the redevelopment of the town and recently launched its Masterplan, which aims to make Middlesbrough:

Bold, Industrious & Open for Business; Middlesbrough reinvented as a great place for everyone

The public can now comment on the Draft Design Code for the zone which underpins the Masterplan by outlining to developers and investors what types of development will be supported within the area.

It will also support new development and help the Development Corporation carry out its planning functions by detailing over-arching principles to guide decision-making.

This backs the ambitions of the MDC and Masterplan, to deliver 4,000 new and high-quality jobs, 1,500 town centre homes, stimulate private sector investment and economic growth and deliver new and improved, clean and safer open spaces.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “We’ve delivered investment to the length and breadth of Middlesbrough and the time has never been better to really ramp up its transformation and deliver for local people.

“From fantastic assets like Teesside University, the Boho zone and its new-look railway station, the future’s bright for the town – but we can go further, faster by drawing these together more closely and bringing about new schemes to make it an even better place to invest and visit.

“This document will make crystal clear the types of new investment we want to see here, so developers come to our door with the right ideas the first time. It will make sure we’re working in lock-step with guiding principles to help speed up the planning process.”

Middlesbrough Mayor and MDC Board Member Chris Cooke said: “The potential for Middlesbrough is huge, but it’s vital that we ensure we get the right sort of development that will deliver lasting and sustainable transformation.”

The move follows the launch of the consultation into the draft Design Code for the Hartlepool Development Corporation.
