First Loganair Service Takes Off From Teesside Airport

Teesside International Airport | Published on: 2nd February 2021

The first Loganair flight in two-and-a-half years has taken off from Teesside International Airport – the airline’s first ever flight departing under the Teesside name.

The service, which yesterday (1 February) was bound for Aberdeen, will run six times weekly and is one of six routes previously announced as part of a long-term deal with Loganair.

Routes to Jersey, Newquay and Dublin are set to begin from summer 2021, with Belfast City starting on 8 March, the same day that it was recently revealed a London Heathrow service between Teesside and the capital would begin, with tickets on sale now.

The London service is initially planned to operate twice a day Monday to Friday with a single flight on Sundays. From March 28, weekend services will increase to one morning flight on Saturdays and two on Sundays.

Securing these flights has made a big difference for one Tees Valley resident, Loganair cabin crew member Pamela Venkitaraman who lives just one mile from Teesside International but, due to her job, previously had to commute to Newcastle daily. Pamela said: ‘This just fantastic, not only to be based at my local airport but the one where my career started more years than I care to remember!’

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “The Aberdeen connection from Teesside is one of our airport’s flagship routes and remains a vital connection for our businesses and key workers, including those going offshore, and who still have to travel despite coronavirus restrictions being in place.

“More than that, though, these new departures represent the new start of our long-term partnership with Loganair, who have returned to the airport after more than two years. It’s brilliant to have them back on board and we look forward to working with them more closely in the months and years to come.

“Despite reduced airport operations due to the pandemic, we pledged to secure and expand our routes and work with even more airline partners to give the people of the Tees Valley, North Yorkshire and wider North East the choice, flexibility and convenience they deserve when flying from their local airport. In recent months we’ve made a raft of positive announcements, with many more to come.

“I also hope that when we’re able to move about more freely, it will give companies and visitors from Aberdeen more of a chance to visit our fantastic area for business or leisure.”

Loganair chief executive Jonathan Hinkles said:

‘I am delighted that Loganair is back flying from Teesside International airport. Not only will we be providing routes for essential workers such as Aberdeen and Belfast, but adding Dublin, Newquay and Jersey during the spring and early summer, travel restrictions permitting. Our London Heathrow service is, we know, highly anticipated give the onward connectivity Loganair is able to provide with its established airline partnerships and we look forward to working with the airport team on other opportunities.’

As part of its London Heathrow service, the Glasgow-based operator has also secured partnerships with some of the world’s biggest airlines, including British Airways, KLM, Air France, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines and Qatar Airways, meaning passengers will be able to travel on one ticket for their entire international journey, from Teesside via Heathrow. This gives them the benefits and reassurance of through check-in and through luggage to their final destination, along with protected connections in the event of delays.

The airline, now the UK’s biggest regional operator, has also named one of its 48 seater jets Spirit of Teesside as a further sign of its commitment to the airport.
