Where are they now?

Many of our former interns have gone on to have strong careers after their time working here.

Katie Maughan

Katie now works as an Assistant Producer at Cloud Imperial Games in Salford, but she was once an intern in our Marketing and Communications Team. Having interned here in 2021, she attributes the TVCA with supporting her in developing transferable, workplace skills.

My internship was a huge stepping stone for me! I got to experience working within a professional environment, which built the foundation for my soft skills. The team was very welcoming and keen to help me grow in the direction I was interested in. I felt supported and excited to learn new things within my role and left my internship feeling more confident in my communication skills.

The internship built up my confidence when it came to future interviews and work experience opportunities. I was able to network with other people within media production through the TVCA and got my first work experience day on set during my internship. This led to more work experience opportunities with Producers, which eventually led to my current Junior role as an Assistant Producer.

Thomas Tweddle

Former business intern Thomas Tweddle now owns two of his own businesses after interning with us in 2021. Following his internship, Tom cultivated a career in business with clear ties to his experience here, crediting the internship with supporting him in understanding business strategies and start-up companies.

The internship provided me with a strong foundation in understanding SMEs and the start-up world. Following on from my internship and applying many of the lessons I learnt from my time with the TVCA, I graduated with a first in Management from the University of Nottingham.

Throughout the programme I gained a strong understanding of how the TVCA supported and accelerated SME growth, the importance of partnerships and the value that wider networks and external support has on developing businesses.

Alongside my studies I furthered my understanding of SMEs and entrepreneurship, starting two businesses of my own. Today, I am fortunate to be working full time on these ventures, one an Internship Platform and a second a web-app design and development agency.

Hope Simpson

Hope Simpson interned in our Creative Place team in 2021 alongside her Art History degree at St Andrews University. Proud of her local heritage, Hope worked with her department to ensure that residents in and outside of the region could also experience the history and culture of Tees Valley.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship in the Creative Place team which combined my love of culture and the arts with current affairs in my local region. From supporting local festivals, composing an industrial heritage report, creating a guide to culture in the Tees Valley for young people, and attending meetings for the Local Creative Education Partnership, I was exposed to many different influential people (artists to museum managers), and many different intersecting industries. An eye-opening experience having just left school which gave me confidence in the sector I hope to work in. I must mention too the wonderfully friendly and supportive colleagues in the Creative Place team I worked alongside.

I undertook another internship in the Ministry of Justice, exploring the Civil Service, and have also worked in a theatre box office to gain further experience in the creative industries. After graduation I hope to start a career within the arts – whether that be in galleries, museums, auction houses, or like in the TVCA Creative Place team, a public organisation supporting the arts sector.

 Michael Widdowson

Michael Widdowson, once a Legal and Procurement intern in the TVCA’s 2021 summer internship programme, now studies for his doctorate at the University Institute in Florence.

I loved the internship at TVCA! Interns were offered a great work environment at TVCA thanks to lovely colleagues and supportive management. Interns were treated like individual members of the team and were not viewed merely as short-term underlings or tea runners.

Working in the legal department was diverse and interesting as work was divided up between the main office and the Teesworks site. The TVCA summer internship was vital in fostering a greater practical understanding of the application of laws to real-world projects. Going on a tour of the Teesworks site diversified my internship by stressing the practical real-world importance of the legal work I was doing and the laws I had previously studied at university. University studies alone do not provide this level of vital practical knowledge on the application of law to the real world.

Since my internship, I have pursued further studies, and I am currently doing a PhD at the European University Institute in Florence. The practical experience gained from the summer internship has given me vital knowledge in understanding the law outside of its core theoretical basis. This has given me unique practical knowledge of law enabling me to stand out in my PhD studies.
