Redcar & Cleveland Road Race

Redcar and Cleveland is the location for the British Cycling National Road Championships Road Races on Sunday 23rd June.

The course will provides a major test for the riders as they take on multiple laps, with a start and finish in the stunning seaside town of Saltburn and unrelenting climbs of East Cleveland’s roads.

Crowds will again pack the route after huge turnout in 2023 where riders were cheered on by thousands of supporters as the race reached its climax at the top of Saltburn bank.

How to get there

To help us stay green and to reduce our carbon footprint we encourage visitors to use alternative, eco-friendly modes of transport when travelling to Saltburn and the surrounding areas. There are likely to be short delays for all road users, so please do plan your journey carefully to avoid disruption. We highly recommended using rail or the park and ride service where possible.

Public Transport

Travel sustainable and use public transport.

  • Train – Saltburn train station is a minutes’ walk away from all the action. Regular direct trains services into Saltburn run to/from Redcar, Middlesbrough, Thornaby, Yarm, Eaglescliffe and Darlington. From further afield there is a direct service from and to Manchester which calls at Northallerton, Thirsk, York, Leeds, Dewsbury and Huddersfield.  For further information please visit the National Rail website.
  • BusConnect Tees Valley allows for quick and easy bus travel planning into Saltburn. Please not there a likely to be short delays for all road users, so please plan your journey to avoid disruption.

Road

Car parking will be limited in Saltburn and we encourage visitors to plan their journeys and arrive early where possible. Again, we strongly recommended using public transport where possible.

Bike Storage and Free Dr Bike Check

Sustrans will be present all day at Marine Parade, offering free, secure bike storage and a Dr Bike repair service.

Free Secure Bike Storage: Those travelling by bike can store it safely with Sustrans for free. The Sustrans team will monitor the bikes all day. Cyclists simply need to arrive with their bike, and a team member will provide a raffle ticket for later collection. While staff will oversee the storage area, bikes are left at the owner’s risk. Bringing a bike lock is recommended for added security.

Dr Bike Check: Visitors with a bike can stop by the Sustrans stand for a free bike health check by the Dr Bike team.

Location: The Sustrans stand can be found on Marine Parade, near the corner of Milton Street. What3Words: ///yesterday.bars.systems. It’s an excellent spot to enjoy the race, with prime views over Saltburn Bank!

Road Closures

To accommodate the start / finish of the road race, Glenside will be closed to all traffic from 0600 – 1900, from its junction with Windsor Road to the junction with Albion Terrace.

Car parking will also be suspended from 00:01 on Sunday 23rd June. The rest of the route will be operating on a rolling closure with roads closed for a short window of around 15 mins whilst the race passes through. There will be a clearway order implemented on the day meaning any parking on the race route will be suspended from 0600.

Spectator Safety Information

For your safety and to assist your enjoyment please:

• Remember the races progresses at a fast pace, please don’t stand in the road even to get a photograph;

• Don’t cross the road once the lead car has passed; the race will be coming at speed;

• Arrive early, the race can go quicker or slower than planned. If you can’t get to a start or finish location, check out other key climbs or points of interest on route.

• Plan your journey in advance some bus services may be suspended or delayed so check with travel operators;

• Don’t park on the roadside on the racecourse, find a safe off-road position;

• Listen to the Marshalls, their advice is your safety;

• Support local businesses

• And lastly watch the race, wave those flags! Smile: you may be on TV and lets show the UK what Redcar and Cleveland has to offer!

    • Join whippet up and have a great time creating your very own bike themed puppet show

    • Whilst your enjoying the race the little ones can take time out and get creative at the giant colour creation stations in and around saltburn!
  • TunedIn! musicians
    • An exciting array of music performances brought to you by the talented young people of Redcar and Cleveland.

At the bottom of Saltburn Bank at the Sea Front Car Park:

  • Big screen – Sea Front Car Park
    • Come and enjoy the bike race on the big screen on the seafront car park! Grab a deck chair and an ice cream and watch the race as it speeds through the Redcar and Cleveland course.
  • Cleveland Wheelers – Sea Front Car Park
    • Bike skills workshops for children and young people based on seafront car park. There will be a limited bikes to loan, but feel free to bring your own.
  • Chasing the Sun hosted by Saltburn Inspired
    • Cycling film premiere brought to you by Saltburn Inspired, A feature documentary film about the power of the bicycle to help save the planet and a special Q&A with the producers 2.30pm  Saltburn Theatre. Tickets are £8 and can be purchased here.

Come and see the amazing display of art works around the town created by some of our amazing communities including Saltburn Brownies, Cleveland Pride, Whippet up and Skelton Cubs.

  • Mosaic Creation
    • Join Helen Gaunt and Derek Mosey in partnership with Badger Hill Academy to help  create a  large scale community mosaic which will  remain on permanent display outside Badger Hill Academy celebrating the cycling events that have come through Brotton and our amazing Brotton community.
